Dd has a horrid cough months ago, took her to the doctor, he said it wasnt in her chest it was at the back of her throat, I thought it sounded worse than that but you know how you just leave and wish you'dd said something later...
Well since then she has been back in the buggy as her wee lungs couldnt keep up with us and she was getting puffed out, whereas before this first cough id not used the buggy for a fortnight and she was fine...Anyway
Took her to the docs today and he said she had to have an Xray TODAY and gave me antibiotics for her, but not to start them till she'dd had the Xray as they would kick in quickly.
Wondered if any other MNers had gone through this and what to expect or not expect when we go back to the docs in a weeks time.
I saw the Xray and on my right it was a big white cloud and the doctor said the left was patchy and shedd get it the report faxed right away. Wishing id asked more now...
Anyone else been through this?

Yes, CharlieCat, twice. First time dd was only 8 months old, second time she was 14 months. She's 22 months now. She'd had a croupy cough and fever and her cough just didn't shift. At first the GP thought she might be asthmatic and gave her an inhaler and it did help a bit but then they sent her for an x-ray and it showed rather like you've described, that there was some phlegm rattling around inside one of her lungs (the 'patchy' looking one). We then got antibiotics and it cleared up. The second time was the same but a bit worse and needed 2 lots of very strong antibiotics before it cleared up.

CC, I haven't been through this, but I hope everything is ok and that its nothing serious, please let us know the outcome, (((BIG HUGS)))

Thanks you two, is your dd ok now stf? Or do coughs get hold her more than normal?

My ds had an xray for similar reasons when he was 16 mo. or so. It's really not a big deal except the keeping them still on the table part. My ds was very wriggly and I was pregnant with dd so couldn't stand there and hold him down and one of the nurses had to do it. They were very nice though and let him press lots of buttons. It was just a cold that went into his lungs and he was given a dose of anitbiotics and it all cleared up and he hasn't had a problem since.

An update for Malinki. Had her back to the doctors today as the antibiotics didnt seem to be having any great effect on her. The doctor hasnt had the Xray back yet, but he listened to her chest and said it was starting to shift but needed another different antibiotic and me to do some physio on her, laying her over my knees, bum up and patting her back to get it moving, all the gunk i assume. Shes not been as tired but still has a cough from hell. Lets hope this lot of antibiotics kill it down dead!

Back again at the doctors, another lot of antibiotics finished and now referred to the hospital

I am bumping this up so the historys here... the hospital appointment was a blood test and an xray again neither of which ive had any results from yet.
Took DD to the doctors last week as I could hear her chest starting to rattle again and he has gave us an inhaler thing to be had 3x a day.
He just said it would ease her coughing.
If shes not better by the end of this week im going to take her back again, she has a virus at the mo and snotty nose..but I dont even know if I should continue with the inhaler when shes better or what.
I guess I should go to the docs and find out.
Does this sound like asthma to anyone who has a dd/ds with it?

Hi Charliecat - don't have any great advice but following this with interest as similarish type thing going on with ds(3) at moment (two lots of horrible cough, ropey x-ray, antibiotics, apparent improvement, down hill again, knackered). I'm up just now because he's coughing and a bit wheezy again so I'm searching Mumsnet and google for asthma stuff. Hope your dd is on the mend - any results yet?

BTW know what you mean abut not being sure re inhalers - we've got one and I'm at a bit of a loss when to stop/start using it. I'd go back and speak to GP - and I'm going to take my own advice and do the same here!

charliecat · 22/10/2004 05:55

Hi Zippy, im up because ive got some strange fluey thing thats making all of me sweat....even my ankles are sweaty!!!!!!
My dd is coughing still, my heart stops and sinks every time she does, shes a lot more tearful than she ever was before, everything makes her cry, think that must be the general wearingdown ness of it all.
I havent been back to the docs yet as shes still not better from her cold/virus, but I should think by the ned of next week I will go in.
Has your doctor pinpointed anything?

Bumping this up to see how you got on Zippy....I havent been using dds inhaler and shes ok now. Going to get her to the docs thought to see what we should be doing. Hospital tests came back clear...they were testing to see if there was a reason her own immune system was kicking in BTW.

Charliecat my little boy has inhalers and we only started back using them today. He had two severe attacks of bronchiolitis and was hospitalised as a result. TBH his symtoms sound a lot like your dd's. Don't know if this helps but maybe you should ask your gp about bronchiolitis.

charliecat · 29/10/2004 22:33

IIRC the doctor said I should go back once we had the hospital tests back..I will see what he says. I sort of know this wont be the last we see of it IYKWIM though..

BTW my DS is 11 months old.

charliecat · 29/10/2004 22:33

Goodness poor sausage, how does he cope with the inhaler?

OP posts:
MissHoolie · 29/10/2004 22:41

TBH he dosnt like it and now he is stronger he can push it a way but with pure brute force he gets it. I sometimes give it to hime when he is asleep as well. I just hope this isnt't the start of another bout which ends up in hospital. Since he was born I have been in hospital either myself or with one of the kids 4 times and he still isn't one.

charliecat · 29/10/2004 22:42

Sad Sad Sad

Yes, been there with the x-ray thing. Ds ended up with pneumonia when they finally agreed to send him. You know how you (parent) know they are ill and it's more than just a cold - that's how it was really and it turned out I was right about the infection being on his chest. They wouldn't then let us go from the hospital until he'd been seen by a paed. who prescribed the correct antibiotics and set him on the road to recovery.
