Baby with uneven rolls of fat - possible hip problem?

HV was checking dd2's pudgy legs and pointed out to me that her creases are not symmetrical, which can indicate a hip problem. what sort of hip problem is she talking about?

we have an appointment with the gp next week and may have to go for a scan.

I think it's when the hips aren't able to rotate freely and would affect any movement like crawling and sitting

she can sit ok, but after a while falls off to one side. does anyone know if these hip problems can be sorted out? is she going to have a problem walking?

Hip dysplasia in humans
In humans, hip dysplasia manifests in early life at a rate of about 4 per thousand. It usually manifests from birth, is more common in girls, highest in firstborns, and is associated in part with conditions such as breech birth and other conditions. It can be detected by a "click" in the hip (although not all clicks indicate hip dysplasia), and confirmed by ultrasound. Two maneuvers commonly employed for diagnosis are the Ortolani maneuver and the Barlow method.
Early hip dysplasia can usually be corrected using a Pavlik harness in the first year of life with usually normal results. Hip dysplasia that develops later can be more problematic.

could be absolutely nothing - good that it's been seen so early

hopefully nothing then. she is such a gorgeous little bubba, i could just eat her all up! like the other 2 dc - yum!

A friend's dd had uneven creases which indicated hip dysplasia or "clicky hips". She had to wear a harness for a few months to correct it and all was fine. I think it depends on the severity etc etc.

hopefully that she can sit is a good sign. she rolls around as well, so can travel. she has been trying to push with her legs... we will see. thanks for the info.

how old is she? after my daughter was born the doctor came round to check her over before discharging us but she did this funny thing with her legs where she pushed and pulled them round, dont know what its called sorry lol, anyway she said she suspected she had a problem with her hip and would need her superior to check it out, she was sent for scans and it turned out both of her little hips where dislocated, she had to wear a harness that pulled her legs up like a little frog lol, she staye din this for 3 months constantly, then her consultant said everything had knitted together fine thankfully. U really need to get ur little one seen immediatly because its relativley easy to fix early on, but alot more difficult if left

The HV made a similar observation at my DD1's 8/9 month check. DD1 had an xray and everything was fine. The HV told us it was likely that everything was fine but that because unsymmetrical creases are an indicator, she had to refer us to be certain.

loopylou6 · 09/05/2007 11:27

i think a certain amount of difference in creases may be normal? coz we all have one foot bigger than the other etc dont we, i do strongly reccomend getting her see to immediatly though

amidaiwish · 09/05/2007 11:29

we had similar at 6 week check - uneven creases and the GP wanted it checked
saw a consultant at hospital, he wanted to see her again at 3 months and then x-rayed.
all was fine.

they are overcautious and refer at the slightest symptom (e.g. uneven fat creases) as if it is caught very young, before they start walking etc it is very easily corrected (harness worn for a bit)
but if it isn't picked up til later then it is major surgery.

she is having her gp appointment on monday.

i have started noticing things like, when she sits, she nearly always falls to the same side and when she is in her door bouncer she tends to use one leg more than the other. i am not sure if i am now imagining these things though..

i have read a lot about it since hana's post, telling me what the HV was talking about - thanks

loopylou - i have seen the harnesses (googled). you are right, they do look like frogs with their legs up like that and kind of cute as well!

dd2 is so keen to get moving, i think we should slow her down a bit if this needs sorting out first.
