hi
my 9 month old niece has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus after her new paediatrician noticed that her head was too big,my sister is really worried and although we have read about it on the internet it all sounds too technical and scary,so whysister has asked me to ask on mumsnet to see if any of you has had any experience, will the fluid go on it's own or will she need an operation?
thanks in advance

Hydrocephalus and spina bifida do tend to go hand in hand. I think the statistics for births with hydrocephalus alone is something like 1 in 10000 iirc.

i've just phoned my sister and the paed. has told her not to worry as baby looks very healthy, alert and happy but they want to keep doing more scans just to make sure it doesn't get worse, she has to wait for an appointment at a children's hospital but it might be a while yet
thank you all for your kind words and concern
ps. she's just learned how to say mama and papa, aaaaawwww

My unborn baby girl has severe hydrocephalus. I would like to talk to anyone who has seen or had any experience with this kind of diagnosis. My nane is Sherry and I am 2 weeks away from a C-section to deliver her.

PollyLogos · 02/10/2005 09:20

Sherioo it can be pretty quiet on here at the weekends - hopefully someone will be along who can help. Otherwise 'bump' this up tomorrow during the morning.

Are the doctors being supportive and keeping you informed of the situation? Do you have family around to help you?

Just bumping this for sherio

Sherioo,DD1's friend has hydrocephalus & has a shunt to drain the fluid into her stomach. She was nearly 3 before anyone realised,as her head wasn't any bigger than normal. She was developmentally delayed, but once the shunt was in,has come on in leaps & bounds & is just a normal little girl who has just had her 4th birthday.

I hope everything goes well for you & your daughter.
