Can a pharmacist refuse to sell you a particular medicine, if they don't agree it is best for you?

Yes they can. For example they can refuse to sell you the morning after pill if morally they don't agree with it. They can refuse to sell you more than 24 paracetamols if they think you are going to kill yourself too.

Clove oil is VERY effective against dental pain btw, on a bit of cotton wool, numbs the entire area. Tastes horrid but does the trick without making you whoozy.

My heavily pg friend was refused caster oil in two local chemists, on the basis that they believed she was going to try and induce labour with it.

to be honest sounds like you spoke to a good pharmacist as with every single drug on the market you should try the weakest first, then work up in strength so he was right, and very good at his job it sems.Incidently you may want to try Paramol they are the strongest ;ain killer off script, check with pharmacist though if you take other medication

SenoraPostrophe · 08/05/2007 21:53

how nice.

my local chemist always just gives me whatever is the most expensive, whether I need it or not.

I went to the pharmacy for some Piriton and the pharmacist said how about this one? (I think it was Piriteze or something). I asked what the difference was and he said he didn't know he'd just been told to promote the other one!

When I said I think I'll stick with Piriton he said why would you do that when this other one is 50p cheaper?

I caved in but felt I'd been bullied into it a bit.

ForcesSweetheart · 08/05/2007 22:13

Pharmacist refused to sell my DH Piriton for me while I was PG, despite my GP telling me I could take it. So he went to another pharmacy and just said they were for himself.

Yep. I've been refused piriton by a pharmacist when I was 36 weeks pregnant too.

3sEnough · 09/05/2007 17:44

Yup - they refused me a canesten pessary at 3 days pre-due date (even though dr let me in previous 2!) Pharmacist was worried it would induce labour!!!!!! I ask you.

ungratefuldaughter · 10/05/2007 09:08

Hospitals will use canestan pessaries in late pregnancy but tell you not to use the applicator as you can go a bit too keen and possibly induce labour - they suggest just using a finger to put it in it actually says this on the leaflet (partners may be needed as by that stage you can't reach as I heard someone being told in the labour ward

The whole point of the pharmacist being there is to intervene in sales of potentially dangerous medicines and opinions differ between them (and there are good ones, bad ones and money grabbing ones just like doctors)

I had a job to get some paracetamol when I was pg as the pharmacist was worried when I told her that I'd been suffering from bad headaches for a few days. TBH I was just pleased that she was concerned about my health. If I wasn't bothered I wouldn't have asked her opinion (I wasn't showing then) but I wanted to make sure that it was safe for my baby first before I took anything. I guess she was worried I might have high blood pressure or another condition which might need to be monitored by my GP .

Pharmacists can refuse to sell stuff to you - as can any shop legally. They're not obliged to take your money or supply you with goods if they choose not to. They don't need to give an explanation either.

serenity · 10/05/2007 09:56

aimsmum - err, yes she was

expatinscotland · 10/05/2007 10:00

Brits always under-medicate.

Sorry, but they do.

Try the weakest first. FUCK THAT!

And yes, so I can throw it away when it doesn't work and it winds up in a landfill and you wind up further out of pocket.

debbsyandsonn · 10/05/2007 10:13

tut tut expat
wrong!!
when i trained as a tech using paracetamol as an example.
you take 1 paracetamol at the onset of pain,if you still have pain you take another an hour later,so you are building analgesia up in your body slowly, according to your pain threshold,if you still have pain, take 2 paracetamol every 4 hrs (so you are building analgesia up in your body)and have paracetamol working at all times, then if that doesnt work you move something stronger.Otherwise if you go to the strongest first you have no where else to go iyswim

expatinscotland · 10/05/2007 10:15

Yes, that's a very British line of thinking, debs. And what's wrong to you is right to others.

I find they undermedicate here.

Other countries get RID of the pain first and then experiment.

debbsyandsonn · 10/05/2007 10:44

oh well each to their own

LainyM · 19/09/2021 01:23

Puriton can make you drowsy and has to be bought over the counter. Piritze you can buy off the shelf, no pharmacist required. The bad thing here is that he did not know the difference or even bother finding out!

I work in medicine and medication every day at work. The times I have stood in a que at a pharmacy and the amount of times I've heard mis information/advice (or lack of) is extremely concerning. I couldn't keep my mouth shut a couple of times! People have learnt to over value pharmacy advice because this is pushed by the government. I had a chemist once that did not know valium is the same as/is Diazepam!? Always do a little research yourself I say before speaking to a pharmacist!! If you find one that knows their stuff you are very fortunate.
