Excema - great results with Aveeno but is there something more natural?

My ds 1 yr had 4 patches of excema on his face. It used to weep and the only thing that cleared it up was hydrocortisone cream.

He has been free from excema on his face for 4 months now as we religiously use Aveeno cream. It took about 4 weeks to work.

It hasn't cured the red bumps on his arms that I've been told are excema too though.

Aveeno though is not as natural as I would like (particularly the bath emollient). Has anyone who has got great results with Aveeno found anything else that works too.

My DS was the same, his face would crack and bleed. I cut out bananas from his diet and honestly it was a miracle, within two weeks his excema had cleared up and his skin was back to how it should be within a month or so. Don't know anything about Aveeno but I used lots of different stuff, including hyrocortisone but no bananas was the cure thank god. Good luck.

You could try InfaDerm body lotion - it is for sensitive skin so doesn't have lanolin, soap etc and is frangrance free and has natural chamomile which helps to heal the eczema. Worth a try, although like TM says, it is a good idea to try eliminating bananas from his diet too - seems to be a problem with a few of my friends' little ones. x

By natural you would like plants rather than minerals?

Debbiethemum · 11/05/2007 10:58

Aloe Vera, I have a plant in the kitchen to use for scalds etc, as does my mother.
But it cleared up Dad's Excema, but did nothing for my sisters.
Maybe try it on one of his arms (do your own tests) so then you can compare to see if it's working or not - so you could do this at the same time as avoiding bananas

what's wrong with aveeno?

sarahlou1uk · 11/05/2007 22:49

I use Cetraben cream on ds body when excema flares up - doctor told me that this is what they use at the local childrens hospital so it must be good. Have tried all others including Aveeno (which is made by Johnsons by the way...), diprobase, eumovate, etc and this is the only one that will keep it under control. For the bath he has Oilatum Junior. Also found a 'wonder balm' that I use on particularly bad patches that I would normally use hydrocortisone for. look here

The most natural would possibly be a homeopathic remedy, some of which are made into topical creams. Ive used one pill remedy for severe flare ups around my eyes and apart from a few days reaction (healing crisis), it hasnt returned for 2 years now.

Whats your worry with Aveeno, it has a good concentration of oatmeal in it. I havent checked the ingredients actually , normally do as I and my dd1 get reactions to lots of things.
