Our hospital generally does this as day surgery. DS had grommets and adenoids out as day surgery but had to stay for 4 hours afterwards. The tonsilectomys were kept in for 6 hours. DS was sore and upset on that occasion (he has had other ops and fared better) but soon came round. I think he was also disorientated.

My son has three and half when he had his adenoids out and grommets.

My son was discharged after having his adenoids out after 4 hours. He was very groggy for two hours, but then he was running about the children's playroom running away from the poor nurse who wanted to measure his blood pressure.

Unless you have complications its most unlikely you will be staying over night.

Ear plugs!! My dd had her taken out just before she was 4yrs old, her voice was very high pitch for the first week. Also make sure you have a sick bowl ready as most bring up some blood afterwards.
I would take in some of her favourite food that she will eat because they need to be eating before they will let you home. It didn't matter if it was crisps and biscuits I just wanted to come home and then relax, let her eat as and when she wants to don't keep to the normal meal times as eating a smaller amount more regular will help the scabs from forming.
I hope I haven't put you off with all of this but DD has been much better since.

My ds had his tonsils and adenoids out lasy year when he was 4.10.he did stay in overnight and i stayed with him. When he came round he was starving and asked for something to eat, he ate a tuna sandwich after that he was still hungry and had soup toast and some chocolate. He slept really well that night, they discharged him the following afternoon after he had eaten breakfast and lunch. He wasn't too bad for the first couple of nights but once the painkillers ran out he was in agony for about 4 days crying all the time and it was a struggle to get him to drink nevermind eat.We let him eat whatever he wanted to try to get something down him.He was fine after about 10 days and was eating and drinking normally.Make sure you have plenty of calpol and nuerofen in.
