Respiratory distress syndrome?

The wife of one of my colleagues had a baby boy yesterday by elective c-section. I've found out today that he is on a ventilator as he has respiratory distress syndrome; they're not sure how long he'll be on it for - at the moment it could be days or weeks

Does anyone have any experience of this? Is he likely to be all right long term?

Dd was thought to have this after she was born, also by elective c-section. I still don't know if she DID have it - she was on oxygen for 12 hours but not ventilated, so maybe not. I never actually dared ask. It is a known risk for c-section deliveries, apparently.
But she showed signs of it at birth. She spent two days in SCBU. She is totally fine now, no more colds or lung problems than any other child.

It must be terribly worrying but I am sure he will be all right long term PicadillyCircus, keep us posted. Best of luck to them all.

One of my sons had respiratory distress syndrome when he was born prematurely at 32 weeks. He was on a ventilator for just 5 days and in the SCBU for about 4 weeks before coming home.
He is now 15 years old and suffered no long term effects of the condition!

My third baby had RDS and was ventilated for a week. He is a very healthy 13 year old now. Hope he recovers soon.
