Bad nappy rash -- like a burn -- and frequent pooing

LambChopsMcGee · 17/03/2018 18:54

So DD (18 mo) has had a sudden onset of nappy rash, along with pooing many times a day (more than once an hour at times, just small ones). She doesn't have diaorrhea, the poo seems normal, just small.

Her bum is so sore she cries and screams when we change her or clean her bum.

We are cleaning with just water and cotton pads, and using doublebase sometimes and Metanium or E45 other times. The thing is she goes so often the creams don't have much chance to work. I've not found metanium to be the miracle others have found it on these boards, sadly, but it seems to make the next poo less burning on the skin.

I am wondering if these are teething poos or if something else is causing it. When she was very small DD was intolerant to milk and had explosive poo. She's been fine since just after 1 yr though. She does also have a bloated tummy so I wondered if it could be related to that? Does anyone have any thoughts?

Also looking for any advice in dealing with the pain and rash/burning or any advice at all really. I feel so sorry for DD.

Thanks.

Could it be a bug? With the bloating as well she might have picked up some stomach bug. Maybe phone 111 to get advice. My DD has terrible nappy rash and the doctor was able to prescribe a cream but you’d need an out of hours appointment as it’s the weekend.

Dd is 8mo and all of a sudden overnight she developed awful nappy rash, very painful looking open sores really really bad. It literally went from slight red and me thinking "oh I'll get some metanium tomorrow" to completely horrendous within hours I've never seen anything like it. I was really worried about it due to the open sores.

I went to the pharmacy and asked if they and anything to help and she gave me some anti fungal cream and it literally cleared it up within a day. Worth a try at the pharmacy.

Thishatisnotmine · 17/03/2018 19:03

I would try switching creams. A different cream might suit better, or even a thickayer vaseline as a barrier. Dd1 had mild nappy rash which went with Metanium but dd2's skin starts to peel after Metanium and we are having better luck with Bepanthen.

No advice on what could be causing the frequent poos though.

Could it be nappy thrush? Sounds a bit like the rash DS had as a newborn, it was so raw and angry and he screamed if we touched it. The Dr prescribed a steroid cream but it wasn't until a midwife suggested cannesten that it cleared up.

DancingLedge · 17/03/2018 19:06

Exact description of how one of mine was if they'd eaten/drunk any citrus fruit.

dirtybadger · 17/03/2018 19:07

I second taking a trip to the pharmacy. Either with DD, or with a picture. May be fungal.

If DD is pooing more frequently, but they are small and solid, could she be constipated, and therefore straining (but only getting a little out each time)? Not clear if by small you mean just not big, or smaller than normal...

flumpybear · 17/03/2018 19:07

If ta small poo then perhaps she's a bit dehydrated. Also nappy rash is horribly sore so get metanium it's brilliant, bepanthen is next best IMO

Babababababybel14 · 17/03/2018 19:08

We used canesten here too it was gone after 1 day. No idea what caused it

Weebo · 17/03/2018 19:09

DS2 went through something similar and when metanium wasn't helping a friends mum recommended I cover his bum with a layer of vaseline then a layer of sudocrem after every change. Like, use lots.

I have no idea how or why but it really did work.

niknac1 · 17/03/2018 19:13

Another vote for Bepanthen, it really worked for our children.Water and cotton wool balls as the can hold the water to bathe the sore bits and we patted dry with clean towels. I used the Bepanthen if they were sore or just to stop them getting sore. If they were sore I would apply it liberally and it was easy to apply. Hope it gets better soon

LambChopsMcGee · 17/03/2018 19:43

Thank you all.
I will see what I can get at the pharmacy tomorrow.

For canesten, is it just a regular over the counter thing?

I don't think she's had any citrus. I hate to admit she won't eat any fruit!

Constipation is possible, as we flew last week and she maybe got dehydrated, but I'm encouraging lots of water and she eats her weetabix.

The poos are very small, just a tiny bit sometimes.

I'll keep on with the metanium etc for now.

Thanks.

Has she been eating grapes?
They used to give my children awful poos which caused nappy rash.

I always recommend Vaseline for any nappy rash as it always worked for me and creates a barrier allowing the skin to heal.

Hope she is better soon.

JellyBean231 · 17/03/2018 19:51

Weird you mentioned weetabix.. My two both had rash/poo like you describe if they had weetabix everyday. I changed them to eating it only once or twice a week and it all cleared up! Maybe too much fibre? Like others have suggested, probably best to pop to pharmacist/dr to check but thought I'd mention it!Smile

LambChopsMcGee · 17/03/2018 22:29

Ah.

It's possible that the weetabix could be a factor. We were away two weeks and she wasn't having her normal breakfast, then straight back into them on our return. I'll cut them out tomorrow and see if anything changes.

Will also get to the pharmacy for Vaseline and other recommendations.

Thank you all

You need a barrier cream , it’s the only thing that will allow the area to heal. Our dd had awful nappy rash and our paediatrician recommended us the best mix, cleared it completely in a few days. Mix in equal amount Vaseline , metanium and orabase (you can buy it over the counter in chemists). Put it on really thick and you will notice such a difference in 24 hours

fleetingthinker · 17/03/2018 22:49

Sounds like the CMPA at play to me. DS would have small frequent poos multiple times a day from his allergies. They were really acrid and burnt his skin within minutes, poor thing.

Grammar · 17/03/2018 22:54

Canesten!!! Yes, ordinary OTC stuff. Works within hours.

LambChopsMcGee · 24/03/2018 19:57

Thank you all for the help.
We ended up going to the Dr and she prescribed fucidin.

I also stopped the weetabix and used plenty of metanium and also vaseline, and got some bepanthen to try as well.

She is much , much better now.
Thanks all!

That's good! Must have been bad to require fucidin. I think finding the right nappy cream is trial and error.
