I'm due to have a colcoscopy on Wednesday due to abnormal smear test.
Really nervous does anyone have any experience just to put my mind rest?!

I was in your position 3 years ago, I had a dye put In my cervix that dyes the abnormal cells white, and then the camera up, they found nothing- had a smear a few weeks ago and all came back normal. Try not to worry

dinosaurkisses · 17/03/2018 00:56

I had one back in 2015.

It was honestly grand- very similar to a smear really, and over fairly quickly. One nurse did the exam and another stood by my head and made small talk to distract me. Wasn't uncomfortable and not something I'd be stressing over if I had to go again.

dinosaurkisses · 17/03/2018 00:59

Meant to say- I didn't need any follow up. I had my next smear yesterday and the gyno Doctor said its v common for women in their mid twenties especially to have some changes found in their smears which require some investigating by colposcopy, but treatment after that is much rarer.

Lemond1fficult · 17/03/2018 01:51

I was really worried about colposcopy after a severe smear result. The nurse and gynaecologist were lovely, and answered all my questions about the procedure before I had to jump onto the stirrups.

If you can see your doctor before, I'd recommend you ask them to prescribe some Valium - I did, and I really helped me relax and not be embarrassed when they were inserting the speculum.

The best bit about it is that they'll be able to tell you then and there what they think they're seeing on the screen, which took a lot of the worry away. In my case, they suspected CIN3 which is treated with LLETZ. I got my results within 2 weeks and they were spot on.

So try not to worry too much, if you can. (And get drugs! Lots of drugs!) Wink

I had mine Thursday. Severe dyskariosis on my smear result. Had the consultant nurse doing it, another nurse helping her set up and stuff, and a HCA who was lovely who just sat at my side. I assumed that I would need the LLETZ so I was prepared for that, and I did need it. They used three injections of local, which just felt like any other injection (half a second of sharp scratch discomfort). Then she removed the cells. The worst bit was after as they said I had gone grey and I was clammy and feeling faint. I think this was the anaesthetic because I have the same thing at the dentist and when I have my implant changed. They gave me some water and when I felt better I went on my way. I had very mild cramping after (I get painful period pain sometimes, this was like 30% of that, more a sensation than pain). I have started to bleed now but its light (and also I would bleed anyway because I was taking norethisterone and stopped so I am due a withdrawl bleed). I noticed it smells a bit funky, and also found what I would describe as a scab yesterday. I am in no pain now. Results in 4 weeks, but I am not too worried as she gave me the stats and its really unlikely that its anything to bother worrying about.

Honestly the worst bit for me is that they said I shouldnt exercise for 2 weeks. Im quite down about that. I cant have sex for even longer, but will cope with that. I am gutted about the exercise...but I guess its worth it.

I had a colposcopy a few years ago and LLETZ at the same time. I am a wimp but I was genuinely fine although I couldn't bring myself to watch the screen and look at my cervix. I told the nurse that I was nervous before the procedure started and she sat up at my head end and chatted to me throughout to distract me and the only issue I had was a slight reaction to the anaesthetic they injected before the LLETZ. It was adrenaline based and my heart rate sped up and it made my legs shake quite badly but nobody in the room seemed concerned and they assured me this is quite a normal occurrence.
I had a friend meet me at the hospital afterwards to take me home but I felt well enough to have a gentle walk round town with her and sit in Costa with a hot chocolate. My recovery after was straightforward although I was admit to being surprised that the discharge I experienced after had a slight smell of "burnt flesh" to it for a few days (sorry for TMI) but I was given a leaflet about aftercare which had a number to call if I had any concerns and when I spoke to them about this they assured me it was quite normal and in itself not a sign of infection unless I had other symptoms alongside it.
I took the day off work and also the day after and, in hindsight, I'm glad I did as the next day I felt a bit shaky and tearful but I think that was mainly relief that it was over more than anything else. My smear tests after the procedure have always been clear since.

I had one quite a few years ago. Was basically just an elongated smear test. Nothing to worry about, didn’t hurt and the nurse and dr were brilliant, put me very much at ease

I watched on the tv screen and asked the nurse lots of questions, she was really chatty and never get the opportunity to see my cervix again Grin

NeeChee · 19/03/2018 07:39

I had one a few years ago. The female doctor was really good, she made me feel more relaxed. It was quite fascinating, being able to look at my own cervix on the screen. She explained everything, told me it all looked normal.
I'd just had my IUD fitted a few days before (unfortunate timing really, the GP who fitted it said the hospital might take it out again if I had to have any treatment, which luckily I didn't). So I got to see the strings and the marks where they'd clamped my cervix.
I had two small biopsies taken, and had some cramping and bleeding afterwards. But I'm not sure how much of that was due to the IUD fitting.
The worst part was not being able to use tampons for a week. I hate the feeling of bleeding onto towels. It feels nasty.

oreosoreosoreos · 19/03/2018 08:01

I’ve had a couple of them - wasn’t too bad when it was actually done, just some mild cramping afterwards.

One time I had to have an adrenalin shot to help stop the bleeding which felt horrible to me, but wore off quickly!

Top tip: if you’re taking someone with you make sure they’ll be ok - took DH the 1st time and the nurse had to spend more time with him making sure he didn’t faint (lying him down on the bed, getting him a drink) than with me Hmm

Thanks for your reply's! Typically my period started so I've had to reschedule for tomorrow.
I feel much better after reading your reply's! I'm just absolutely terrified that they will find something sinister Confused.
I know I'm being irrational but my anxiety is through the roof!
