Low white blood cell count?

slippynips · 15/03/2018 16:46

I requested a blood test last week as I have been really tired since January with just 0 energy. I had a miscarriage in December and wanted to check I’m not anaemic.

I had a call back from the dr today to say that the test results show a low white blood cell count and so they want me to have another test in 4 weeks.

From looking on dr Google, low white blood cell count could be down to an infection or virus. But I have not had any illness that I’m aware of, just tired for about 3 months.

Has anyone else had unexpected low white blood cell count and why did you have it? Did you get given any treatment?

TIA

I have low white cells every time I have bloods. They do the bloods (to check my iron as I suffer from low iron), call me back worried about white cells, then I usually end up having them retested once or twice more in the next few days- weeks (the first time they called me back in 48 hours later which worried me). This has happened three times. The doctors dont seem worried, though. Last time I saw the doctor they said some people just have low white cells, and that as I wasnt suffering from particularly frequent infections he wasnt worried and wouldnt put me on prophylactic ABs. Fine by me. I know this doesnt tell you much, but just some reassurance that it may not be a big deal.

Dirtybadger thanks for replying. Have they ever said your low white blood cells is related to low iron levels? Or has it been coincidental?

They never said they were connected. They have been low when my iron has been under control, so I assume not. I couldnt find anything on the internet to explain a connection (I did wonder that). One thing I remembered the doctor saying after I posted was that my white cells were in the normal range in one test (out of maybe 8?). He said as we knew my white cells "could get into the normal range" he wasnt worried, and they must just be low naturally, and to come back if I had any symptoms or started getting viruses more regularly. Its my neutropenes which are low which I think is what fighte viruses. I am rarely ill. I might mention it next time though as I just had to have LLETZ treatment so am wondering if low WC might stop me fighting off HPV as normal. Might just be me worrying.

Yep. I had about 50+ blood tests over the years, all "fine"
Locum GP did bloods as I was having night sweats, went back through my tests and I had a low neutrophil count on every one
Turned out I have autoimmune neutropenia so I produce enough neutrophils but kill them off before they mature properly. I'm under haematology, have appointment every 12 weeks and inject myself with a bone marrow stimulant weekly. My condition is very very unusual in adults though

I also have been told I’m slightly low on white blood cells and need retesting in 2 months time? Really concerned! I’m not poorly so don’t understand?

Hi have you any more information? I too have slightly low white blood cells and don’t know why?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 09/08/2018 11:19

My sister had this recently - was retested 8 weeks later and they were back to normal. She’s pretty healthy apart from IBS, so the dr said she had probably just been fighting a minor virus without really noticing.
