Does anyone have any similar experiences? Does anyone know what could be causing this? I gave birth to my ds in mid November 2006. Usual 4 ish weeks of lochia, but nothing since. I am 100 per cent sure I am not pregnant again. GP told me not to worry for another few months, then she will do a blood test(?) My periods were never regular but longest gap between them before was 12 weeks, and ds is 25 weeks old today.

Are you breast or bottle feeding? Or both?

Bamzooki · 07/05/2007 19:50

Are you b/feeding? Many women who breastfeed don't get AF back for many months, or till they stop feeding. The b/f hormones prevent the bleeding - but NOT ovulation as my friend found out to her cost!

Where you aneamic after the birth? This could lead to a delay.

I had DS1 2nd Dec 06 and have only just had period. I formula feed. TBH I started to get a bit worried but GP and HV said it was fine. I did diet and start running quite quickly after the birth, they said that may have something to do with it. Don't worry

God mine took a year to come back but then I was bf.

tortoiseSHELL · 07/05/2007 19:54

Ds2 was born 1st May 2006, and I got AF back when he was about 10 months old. Ds1 was about 6 months, dd about 7 months. The difference I think was that ds2 is STILL feeding in the night, but once he reduced that to once a night then AF came back.

SparklyGothKat · 07/05/2007 19:54

mine took about year to return but I was breastfeeding.

I don't think this is unusually late, tbh - particularly if you're breastfeeding.

Mine took over a year to come back, and the GP wasn't remotely concerned.

The blood test your GP mentioned will check your hormone levels, just to make sure that everything's OK. Something like an underactive thyroid or other hormonal imbalance could cause period problems, and if it carries on that's what they'll be checking for. But I wouldn't think there's anything to worry about just yet. It's still very early days.

My DS2 was exclusively breastfed for 5 months, now he is 95% breastfed and on solids at 8.5mths, still breastfeeding during the night. Think I'm just about to start my 5th or 6th AF!

Forgot to say, stopped bf ing at 6 wks!

If your periods were irregular initially it is likely that they will revert to this pattern of irregularity.

If you are not bf it may be due to some underlying hormonal imbalance (a condition called polycystic ovaries is often to blame for irregular periods) or a thyroid problem.

In either case it is worth seeking proper medical advice sooner rather than later. A blood test can be done to see what your hormone levels are like. The levels of LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (follicles stimulation hormone) need to be looked at and compared against one another.

Thank you AttilaTheMeercat, that has helped me a lot more than my GP has on this subject. Will book an appointment to get the blood tests done.
