How long should gp blood results take?

I had some bloods taken a week ago today and I have rang the surgery and apparently they haven't had anything back yet, is this usual? I am worried they may have got lost. I think it was a full blood count and hormone tests.

I just got mine back after having bloods taken on Tuesday. I'd ask them when they expect them in.

Seeline · 15/03/2018 15:19

I had mine done at the GPs the other week and was told if I hadn't heard anything after 2 weeks to ring (I assumed if it was urgent they would contact me before then).
The first lot I had done at a local medical centre and the GP rang that evening with the first lot of results and 2 days later with the second.
It probably depends what they are for.

I'm waiting for these blood results back before the doctor will refer me to the hospital so I hope they come back soon.

Depends what the bloods were for. I have mine done monthly and they’re back by the next day. However some do take longer to come back. So you’d have to say roughly what they were for?

Depends what they’re for. Should be delivered to the lab same/next day and the blood count will be run almost immediately.

The hormone tests it will depend on what they’re looking at - if you’re having a full thyroid panel and are also looking at antibodies that often gets sent out to a third party lab. Just plain tsH is done most places.

Some bloods take hours for the lab to process. Some days. Some weeks. Some even months. Some will be done by the local hospital lab, some in a regional laboratory, some only done by one or 2 places in the country. So it very much depends what actual blood tests they're doing.

FlippingFoal · 15/03/2018 19:43

Full blood count will have been reported within 4 hours of arriving in the lab (usually an hour) and hormone tests 24 hours, but usually by the end of the day. Lab is usually quick, it just takes a while for the GP to act.

If you phone your local lab they won't be able to give you the results though so if your GP says to phone the lab, please don't.

As far as I know it's just basic blood and hormone testing, nothing especially specific that they are looking for, I wish I could remember what was on the form. I know thyroid, liver enzymes, oestrogen and testosterone were on there.
