Ok, I have some questions for all who pledge allegiance to the Mooncup ,

I'd be very grateful if you could answer them for me as every month I consider buying one, have even got as far as picking them up in Boots or as far as checkout online...and then I chicken out,if you can help I may actually go ahead and buy one!

  1. How do you deal with Mooncups in public/ work/ friends loos etc? It's one thing to rinse it out and reinsert it in your own bathroom but surely a totally different kettle of fish when you have to go into a public loo to remove it , come out to rinse it and then return to the cubicle to reinsert it . This is my biggest worry tbh. Do you all revert back to tampons in these situations?

  2. If you have heavy periods is it a problem? Leakage etc. (in my case TMI warning, changing Super plus tampons every 2 hours on heavy days and still wearing an ST just in case as it has been worse on occasion)

  3. The suction thing , is it actually physically harmful do you think?

Sorry these q's all seem very negative, I really do want to start using one but I'm a bit of a wuss, (despite 2 out of 4 protracted labours, therein lies the problem perhaps!!)

I'm sure I had more questions but I can't think of them now, I think it's the embarrassment

MrsW that does sound bad. Have you tried looking at this page and seeing if any of the advice there is relevant? If you still find you have problems you can contact Mooncup and ask for more help, or I believe they do offer money back to unsatisfied customers...

flightattendant · 07/05/2007 14:56

Was thinking about it but actually might just stick with pads...it does sound good in many ways but I'm paranoid about TSS etc. and always want to wash my hands before inserting a tampon or whatever - so I wouldn't find it easy in a public loo with no basin in the cubicle - I'm a bit like Monk, don't even want to touch the doorhandles or locks!!

Snaf · 07/05/2007 14:58

I believe TSS is not an issue with Mooncups, at all.

Snaf · 07/05/2007 15:00

TSS linked with absorbency and bacterial growth

But if you don't fancy it, you don't fancy it!

FrannyandZooey · 07/05/2007 15:00

LOL wash your hands before you go in to the cubicle then

or use scary spray anti bac thingy

you can usually find a disabled toilet in places like libraries, supermarkets and dept stores if you really need a toilet with a sink available.

MrsWednesday · 07/05/2007 15:01

Thanks for the link.

I'm sure the problem is that I'm putting it too high, but if it's as low as it's supposed to be it feels uncomfortable (and I've trimmed the stem off completely).

I won't be defeated by the bloody (excuse pun) thing though.

mears · 07/05/2007 15:01

Thanks for the link. Surely it will leak it it is just held in by vaginal muscles? Does it stay in place the whole time? Would imagine you would need a ST just in case?

FrannyandZooey · 07/05/2007 15:02

It just sits there, mears, it isn't held in by anything in my control I can assure you

and is less likely to be pushed out during a big poo than a tampon IME

FrannyandZooey · 07/05/2007 15:05

MrsW I would experiment with having it as low as you can without it feeling uncomfy then

I know different people do use it in different positions, after all we are all different shapes and sizes in there

Mears there is some kind of suction going on as mentioned earlier

it really doesn't move around

DragonFaerie · 07/05/2007 15:06

Have just ordered my Mooncup
Thanks guys, you'veconvinced me to give it try!

Thanks for info - will think on....

FrannyandZooey · 07/05/2007 15:08

Ah good on you DF

Thanks Mears I hope you don't feel too steam rollered We tend to be a bit evangelical about them as you may have noticed...

manictreecreature · 07/05/2007 15:11

The only leakge issue I have ever had is occasionally at night (I must wriggle around a lot in my sleep, so I wear a pad at night in the first days.) Pain has been less for me and lighter flow. I have quickly got into the habit of carrying small bottle of water round with me at that time for public loos.

flightattendant · 07/05/2007 15:50

Thanks guys, good link... as you can tell I worry about everything, often misguidedly...it's kinda intriguing that so many MNers are evangelical about it, because IME that usually means it is something worth trying...I get a bit like that about cloth nappies! So will also possibly give it a try. Particularly as I don't go out.

chonky · 07/05/2007 15:53

Definitely give it a try FA. I was converted by the MN mooncup zealots and haven't looked back . Nothing would ever persuade me to go back to tampons, ever.

flightattendant · 07/05/2007 16:06

I'm getting warmed to the idea...I do use washable pads already which I like.

I am a big fan of mine. When out and about, I'd use a disabled toilet if you want to rinse it out properly.

However, when you do get it wrong and pull it out too fast it can result in far more spectacular spillage than a mere tampon, IME .
