Just after some sage advice.

My DH had oysters for lunch on Saturday ... and then has been up all night last night throwing up. Do you think it could be connected (ie food poisoning taking affect 36 hours after consumption) or a bug?

yes it can take up to 72 hours for food poisoning

Mrscog · 12/03/2018 07:25

I think food poisoning is more rapid than that, but I suppose it could be. It’s more likely to be a sickness bug. How bad is he - I know someone who ate a dodgy oyster and within hours he was a vomiting, shitting, sweating and hallucinating mess!

Noro is one of the most common causes of vomiting after oysters and has an incubation period of up to 48 hrs

I wish people didn't make up opinions on the spot on things that matter..

link to nhs on food poisoning It can take up to a few days to show its head I'm afraid. But even if it is food poisoning he may well still be contagious.

Thanks for this. Yes it does sound like food poisoning. The link was very helpful.

There are lots of different types of bacteria that can cause gastric upset that can incubate for longer periods than 24 hours. Some are instant, others, like listeria can incubate for 6 weeks! I spent a happy week doing an absolutely nails food hygiene course where we had to know the impact of all bacteria.

Oysters are a classic source for giving norovirus. The only people not at risk or people who eat them frequently so keep immunity ongoing.

The good news is if he was healthy to start, NoroV should be over & done with in 24 hours after he started. Unfortunately, he will still be quite contagious to others, though, so take precautions for at least 4 days after his last symptoms.

This is why I love mumsnet. Thank you for your help and giving me some good sound knowledge. He's def not any worse, he's "better" in that he's stopped d&v and drinking plenty of fluids.
