My brother is in his early 60s with raised blood pressure and had a stroke 10 days ago. Caused by a bleed. Small bleed but in a critical area which they say is too badly damaged to recover. But his brain may make new pathways.

So he currently has little use of one side of his body, is on liquid diet, speech affected.........doctors aren’t saying much about how much if at all he will improve......everyone is diffferent, etc. Which I get. But do some stay the same, some full recovery and everything in between?

I would say yes to your last comment. I also would tell you that it’s amazing how well someone can recover it they are determined and have the rehab help.

I think it helps if the patient has some motivation to get better. My grandad had a stroke at 60. He was paralysed down his left hand side. But he loved golf and was determined to get back on the golf course. He was back playing golf within the year. His writing and speech took a bit longer but came back too. He lived for another 25 years and had a good life.

Sorry about your brother . My friend had a burst aneurysm and a stroke shortly after , she was in intensive care for months. She has made an amazing recovery , although won't ever be the same but her speech is pretty good and she can walk .

Everyone is different but in general the biggest improvements will happen within six months and then smaller ones can happen up to 18 months to two years. Is he receiving specialist stroke rehab services? They're being cut all the time but usually accessible for 4-6 months post stroke. The stroke association can be helpful. Hope things improve Flowers

Mum said he is getting rehab and will need rehab for some time but not sure what this consists of.

Is there stuff we ought to be asking for?

Thanks for the replies.

I’m sure he’ll already be getting speech and language therapy input for his swallow, speech and diet, and physio for his hemiparesis (loss of use of one side). Occupational therapy will likely get involved for any adaptations and cognitive assessment. Sounds like you’ve had a shock, understandably, but people can and do make good recoveries from stroke. Hopefully your brother will be one of them. Does he have a specialist rehab consultant yet? What area of the country are you? Handhold here if you need it Flowers
