Hi all,
I’m not a mum but in need of some advice. My eyesight has worsened four times in the past 18 months where I have had to have new glasses and lenses. My eyesight is already bad and this is worrying me. I am 25. My current prescription is
R -3.75 -0.50. 5.0
L -3.25. -0.75. 180.0

Do you think I should be concerned? Any advice would be appreciated:)

If your having Renault eye tests it would be picked up if there was a serious problem
My husband can’t see anything without glasses since aged 15 he’s 40 now and it’s stabilised the last 5 years

Mine has gone through phases throughout my life of relatively fast deterioration then stability - have you asked your optician if you should be concerned? Your optician can refer you for medical investigation if needed.

I am being referred to a hospital. Waiting for the appointment to
Come through. I have blurred optic nerve as well. I just wanted some advice. To know if other people’s prescriptions can change like this.

I think I remember something similar. Doesn't have to be a linear progression, but why not go and have someone take a look? Expect the possibility to be buying bifocal eyeglasses when you're around 40, which is not as bad as it sounds, and have a special pair for when working with your computer.

RaspberryCheese · 11/03/2018 18:40

OP believe me, your eyesight is not bad..its just not perfect.

phoenix1973 · 11/03/2018 18:42

My eyes are -9.75.
Yours aren't so bad.

When you say you've had to have new glasses 4 times in 18 months, have you HAD to have them (i.e. not safe to drive/can't see where you're going) or is the optician pushing you to buy new ones for very small changes in prescription? Some of them naming no specsavers are very sales target driven.

Conditions such as thyroid disease can cause changes in eyesight. My prescription went up and down for months before I was diagnosed.

underneaththeash · 11/03/2018 21:19

Its not that usual for your prescription to change that much when you're 25 and there are a few health/eye conditions that can cause it to change (including pregnancy!)

You've been referred, so hopefully they can find the cause. Although its may just be a normal change, your prescription isn't too bad on the scale of things.

Incidentally, myopes don't usually need reading glasses/bifocals until their late 40's.

An optician once told my DH that when an eye first starts to become short-sighted, it usually continues to get more short-sighted for about 10 years and then stabilises. My prescription is about the same as yours but it was stronger for a while in my late 20s/early 30s!

Incidentally, myopes don't usually need reading glasses/bifocals until their late 40's.

I'm short-sighted and older than that, and I can read close things just fine if I just take my glasses off!
