Recovery from laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal

I had the above done on Mon this week and am still feeling like I’ve been kicked in the stomach. I’ve searched threads on here and seemingly loads of woman are back at work after three days - I can barely shuffle around the house!

I’ve got four incisions and the lowest bikini line one is quite sore but not infected looking at all. Abdomen just feels really achy and bruised.

Am I a malingering layabout or is this normal? The info from hospital was scant but kind of implied a day or two of discomfort at most. I don’t feel I’ll as such, just like someone’s been rummaging around inside my innards. Which they have.

Sad

I had a laprascopy recently to diagnose and treat pelvic adhesions so not exactly the same but similar procedure. I was no way near sorted after three days, I didn't drive for two weeks. I think everyone is different but I think anything less than a couple of weeks is lucky

I’ve had six laps for endometriosis and I can honestly say my fastest recovery was three weeks. They do a lot of cutting and burning inside though. Honestly my c section recovery was easier! Just because the cuts are small doesn’t mean that there isn’t significant swelling etc internally

AlishaMary · 08/03/2018 17:01

Thank you for replying. Really hope I can drive by next week but can’t even think about it right now.

Bumping for you. I'm having similar done the week after next but ovaries and tubes are coming out ( nothingbto do with a cyst). I'm wondering about the recovery. I've bought laxatives and anti wind tablets for afterwards. Hope you feel better soon.

mrsrhodgilbert · 08/03/2018 17:04

Mine is a simple removal, nothing actually wrong with them, I've been told two weeks recovery. I'm not convinced.

Danniotley · 08/03/2018 17:12

I had 6 weeks off work with mine and still felt awful when I went back.

AlishaMary · 08/03/2018 17:18

I only suffered a little from wind pains in my chest so I escaped that horror thankfully. I took dulcoease to counteract the bunging up effects of morphine so ok on that score too.

Am reassured that three day recovery is unusual. It was a large cyst in an awkward spot too apparently.

I had laparoscopy sometime ago (I was 32) for PCOS and some other issues, it was much less than yours but no way I could be ready to work after 3 days , I came back after a week but my job was not tiring physically and I was able to work from home a lot.
After surgery I was told that it's actually good to be active straight away gradually increasing, walking is the safest activity. Hope you feel better soon.

I’m not up to anything outside of the house yet Shock Maybe I’ll shuffle around the garden tomorrow. I’ve been making sure I get up and go upstairs to the loo rather than downstairs so I am moving and have pottered a bit today but I think I’d cry if I had to put actual clothes on and go out Blush

I am enjoying Shakespeare and Hathaway though. Perfect tv for convalescence imo.

On the plus side I had a lot of vaginal bleeding that I wasn’t expecting but that’s stopped. Yay.

Also does anyone know if it’s ok to take painkillers as follows;

Dosage is 1 or 2 tablets up to four times a day, leaving at least four hrs between doses, max 8 tablets in 24hrs. Is it ok to split the tablets into 5 doses? So 3 doses of 2 tablets and 2 doses of 1 tablet? Still 8 in the 24hr period.

Sorry if it was misleading, "stay active" meant walking around the house to make a tea and so on, rather then staying in bed all the time.
Can't help with painkillers, I always stick to 4 hours rule, as I worry about their affect on digestive system .

AlishaMary · 08/03/2018 20:01

Ah ok. I can manage cups of tea Grin

I’m in a similar position - I had a cyst removed and treatment (excision and ablation) of endometriosis last Wednesday. I was signed off for two weeks and I doubt I will be fighting fit by the time next Wednesday comes round.

I have had my most active day today - which hasn’t involved much other than driving and getting my non-dissolving soluble stitches removed - and I’m now on the sofa in agony and exhausted!

I am also wondering if I just can’t cope - but I did see a thread somewhere which said that a diagnostic lap (ie nothing treated or removed) is usually a week’s recovery... but you should expect two weeks or more if you’ve had any kind of treatment. Which makes sense to me.

rest up and hope you feel better soon!

First two days I felt like I'd been hit by a bus, day 3 suddenly felt loads better but still bruised. It was a week before i had no more pain.

AlishaMary · 09/03/2018 20:30

Thanks for those replies.

I’m still feeling rubbish but am ok with that now I think Grin Have lowered my expectations as well. I have done some bits around the house today and it’s totally wiped me out. Luckily dh is at home all weekend so I won’t have to do much expect boss him about from the settee Grin

Just an update for anyone who searches for similar in the future.

Feeling much better today, one week after the op. I managed a short walk yesterday (1000 steps) but felt a bit wobbly when we got back. Had to do school run this morn (about 900 steps from car) and felt v sick and shaky when I got back so am back on sofa with tea and biscuits. Lower abdomen still feels achy but I can move freely etc. Just have to watch out for the cat trying to jump on my lap!

If I had a job to go back to then no way would I be ready today. The tiredness is a real killer which surprised me.

Thanks to everyone who commented previously Flowers

I had an ovary removed a couple of years ago and was told it would take six weeks to recover fully. I was doing short walks within a few days but anything like lifting etc was a no-no for me. I didn't drive for the six weeks, partly because I didn't have to but mostly because I was too stiff! I didn't have pain, as such, just a really odd stiffness in my middle, so I couldn't twist or bend that much for ages. I can't remember when things got back to normal, but they just did, gradually. Don't be too hard on yourself. We all react differently. I was sick as a pig with the anaesthetic, got infections in two of my wounds so had ten days of antibiotics and felt like I'd been hit by a truck for the first two, three weeks.
