Hi

Just looking for advice or anyone who has experienced this.

I was born without ovaries and I am on HRT to protect my bones as I've got osteoporosis I'm only 28. I've been on HRT 3 years and now my periods are very irregular. I get a half week period then they stop and start a week later. Usually really heavy and painful they last a week and a half. It's starting to control my life. Every holiday in the last 2 years is ruined because I just don't know when they will start. I had a 3 week period before Christmas and constant migraines. I missed a month of work because I was so sick. and I was put on Utolav to stop it. When I came off it I had a 2 week period and it ruined Christmas for me. I am at the end of my tether.

I am infertile and the size of my womb means I will never carry a baby. It has taken me so long to accept this and now I want a hysterectomy and to start post menopausal osteoporosis treatment but I'm too young and no doctor will do it.

I suppose I needed to vent. I've spent so long being a rare case.

Would you be able to have a mirena coil fitted? That would stop the periods. It lasts for 5 years.

Raven88 · 07/03/2018 12:40

I've never thought of that. I'll have to ask. Thanks for the advice.

I don't understand this. if you have no ovaries, how are you having periods? You can't have a period with ovaries that aren't there.

What kind of HRT do you use? Is it the sort that gives you a bleed once a month? Have you been missing any tablets or anything which could affect your withdrawal bleed (if you use that kind of HRT/)

Raven88 · 07/03/2018 13:54

@PollyPerky The HRT I am on causes the bleed. I take Elleste Solo once a day and never miss a dose.

If you have a uterus still which you do, you should not be using estrogen only HRT!
You need a combined sort where you have progeston for 12 days of each month.

The bleeding you are having is most likely due to a thickened lining in your uterus.

Who on earth put you on estrogen-only? That is completely against the prescribing rules . Women with a uterus need HRT with a progestogen 12 days each month, or the Mirena coil.

You need to see your dr u rgently or your specialist and get this sorted.

This is from NetDoctor

What is Elleste solo used for?
Hormone replacement therapy to relieve symptoms of the menopause

Elleste solo tablets are a continuous, oestrogen-only form of HRT. As they only contain oestrogen, they are most suitable for women who have had a hysterectomy.

Women who have not had a hysterectomy should also be prescribed a progestogen medicine to take with this medicine for the last 12 to 14 days of each 28-day pack.

This is because oestrogen stimulates the growth of the womb lining (endometrium), which can lead to endometrial cancer if the growth is unopposed. A progestogen is given to cause a monthly withdrawal bleed, which opposes oestrogen's effect on the womb lining. This reduces the risk of endometrial cancer, though it does not eliminate this risk entirely.

This is known as combined HRT. If a woman has had her womb surgically removed (a hysterectomy), endometrial cancer is not a risk, and a progestogen is not necessary as part of HRT (unless the woman has a history of endometriosis).

@PollyPerky thank you Smile I will be making an appointment tomorrow. My doctor put me on that medication as the specialist wanted me on HRT but they were still trying to work out what to do with me. I'm the first person that specialist treated with my condition so it was new to her.

I hope you get on okay. It's pretty appalling to be honest that your GP or the specialist should make such a simple error. You have been on the wrong HRT all this time. (Unless there are other reasons I don't know of.)
The reason for your bleeding is the lining is coming away at all odd times instead of once a month with the type of HRT you should have.

There is a condition called hyperplasia- this is when the womb lining overgrows. It can happen when you use estrogen-only HRT. If this is not corrected, it can develop into cancerous changes.

Please insist your GP refers you for an ultrasound scan to check the lining is all right, then puts you on sequi HRT.
