Worried about dd (16) constant tiredness and hair loss

She has a round bald patch on the edge of her forehead a bit bigger than a 50p piece. It's been coming a while but now it's very noticeable when she puts her hair up. She says it's itchy occasionally but not massively.

She's also permanently tired. Happily spends all day in bed dozing and no longer does anything else other than go to school.

Other changes recently are that she's had a breakout of spots on her forehead for the first time. Also she's just gone on the pill for very heavy periods (but only last week and other issues have been around for a couple of months)

I don't think she's depressed although she is quite stressed with exams and friend issues. I will be making a gp appointment but just wondering about getting some supplements?

It would be best to take her to the GP for blood tests. With heavy periods she's probably low in iron and we're all vitamin D deficient this time of year. Should check her thyroid too with those symptoms.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 04/03/2018 20:52

I would definitely encourage her to see a doctor, the poor thing. If she wants to go in alone, make sure she makes a list of everything that's wrong - there's nothing more frustrating than them coming out having only mentioned one thing!

Make a GP appt. why wouldn’t you?

She has several symptoms going on.

The GP will probably arrange blood tests. I’d suggest a good multi vit plus a vitamin d supplement, plus fresh air and exercise.

That level of tiredness is not normal.

Definitely get her some blood tests, iron deficiency can be linked to alopecia I had similar myself and while haemoglobin was in range my ferritin was low, ask for all iron related tests. Agree thyroid should be checked too just in case and B12, Vit D and usual standard blood tests.

Jesus Christ surely you can see a GP appt is more important than asking about flipping supplements on mumsnet. Hmm

dantdmistedious · 04/03/2018 21:21

Why haven't you taken her to the doctor for a blood test?

Flowersonthewall · 04/03/2018 21:22

Get her to the docs!

TheBechdelTest · 04/03/2018 21:24

Oh ffs. Yes I am making her a gp appt. Read the fucking post. Why do people feel the need to be abusive to worried parents.

Funnily enough my gp isn't open on a Sunday night. Confused

Thank you to the helpful posters.

Feroglobin liquid I have found great for a little boost. I've tried other multi vitamins/iron tablets but the liquid works alot better for some reason.
Fingers crossed she just needs a little pick me up, low iron can make you feel wiped out

I experienced exactly this when I was younger was first diagnosed with alopecia but it turned out to be iron deficiancy was put onto iron pills for a good few months. Changed my diet to include more red meat and greens and been fine since. Hope you get it sorted xx

I was also on the pill microgynon during this stage which I swear didn't help and after googling quite a few people lost hair on it x
