Usual wait for a hernia repair op?

DH has been diagnosed with a hernia on Wednesday and needs an op to repair it. How long did people on here wait to have theirs repaired on the NHS? He is self employed in a manual job and is concerned about not being able to work at full capacity for a long time (and I am concerned that he will try to and do more harm Hmm ).

Also, how long after the op till you were able to drive again and also do normal activities? Thanks,

My DH has a hernia. He saw the GP on the 27th Dec for referral. He's just seen the doctor at the hospital last Tuesday and they think the op will be end of May/beginning of June.
He's having his done keyhole surgery and the recovery time quoted seems fairly quick. DH had a hernia op in his late teens and the recovery was a lot longer.

Meant to add that it maybe different from area to area. We've also gone with a different hospital to our local one just so DH could be seen quicker.

Thanks it'ssixo'clock . Looking at the info on the nhs site it looks like he'll probably have open surgery as its his first and only on one side.

It is a long name! I struggle when I have to log in!

I hope your DH gets on ok. I asked my DH how he got on with his first hernia and he said his was open surgery too. He seems to think it was about a 6 week recovery, no driving for a substantial time too. It was 1996 so it's all a distant memory!

Bloody typical though, my DH fell over on the ice last week and has ripped his even further!

Do you know the signs of a strangulated hernia? The doctor said if my DH becomes strangulated then he may not be a candidate for keyhole anymore.

DH has just returned from hospital this evening having had a double hernia repair this afternoon. He originally went to drs in December, saw a consultant on 9th or 10 th of Jan and had op today. Been signed off work initially for 2 weeks. Could have had the surgery quicker but we had a holiday booked for 1/2 term and consultant said he couldn’t fly for 6 weeks after surgery.

Hope your husband recovers well cassgate.
I forgot we've got a holiday booked for late July. I better get DH to check the timescales for that.

Doesn't help that he's starting a new job and we're moving house! Always something!

dollybird · 05/03/2018 22:29

Yes, we have printed off all the info so know the signs to look for.

Cassgate that sounds more positive, thanks.

Someone who DH does a lot of work for just found out today that someone else who works for him very recently died as he had a hernia that he didn't get treated Shock Maybe DH will listen to me and his mum and stop talking about waiting till next winter as he'll be less busy, or driving after a week even if he doesn't have keyhole surgery Hmm

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your DP dolly bird. My dad has an abdominal hernia which is now huge, and he has been waiting for 12 months so far for surgery.
When he first saw the consultant the hernia was considered suitable for keyhole surgery but with the passing months it has become so large that this will no longer possible, and a whole theatre session will now be required for it to be repaired.
His operation has been cancelled 3 times now, once because his original Surgeon left the hospital, the second because insufficient theatre time had been allocated for his operation and the third time about a month ago when he was actually prepped and ready to go down to theatre but there was no post operative bed for him!.
My dad is retired so work is not an issue for him, but the surgeon has made it very clear that although he will be up and about very quickly after his operation he must not drive for at least 3 weeks or do any lifting for at least 2 months.
It’s probably fair to say that my dad’s hernia is larger than most but I get the impression that no matter the size of the hernia it would be foolhardy to rush the recovery process. Easier said than done I know when you are in a manual job and self employed.

Millymae I hope your dad gets his op soon. Even though he's retired it must be so frustrating having to wait so long and have it cancelled 3 times. I hope he's not in too much pain
