Anyone else ever had a cytoscopy?

Really bricking it tbh, got one on Wednesday, think it’s a flexible one, leaflet just says not painful, slight discomfort afterwards.
I’m generally ok, I’ve had 5 babies without pain relief but my anxiety stems from years ago when I had a hysteroscopy, my word, most painful thing I’d ever had, they had problems trying to dilate my cervix and I was climbing up the bed in pain...took through to a ward to recover where every other bugger had had GA for the same procedure, when asked why I hadn’t had anaesthetic I was told they thought I was young enough to cope with it without needing any.

I’m worried about how much this’ll hurt and what it’s actually like, if they spot cancer do they let you know there and then? Nurse on the phone said they may mri my pelvis too...

It's not that bad at all, honestly I'm the biggest wuss going and I didn't find it any worse than a smear (different orifice obvs)!

Mine was to rule out bladder cancer and yes the results are instant. You get to see the inside of your bladder on the screen at the end of the bed. It's all over in five minutes. The only discomfort is a slight sting when the tube first goes in. It once it's inside your bladder you don't feel anything. Afterwards I had no discomfort whatsoever.

It wouldn't bother me at all if I had to have another one.

I was bricking it too by the way! I promise it's not that bad. Thanks

Ok, thanks, can I ask did it sting at all when you went to wee afterwards?

I had one last week and a hysteroscopy under general before. Cystoscopy gave me a injection in my bum of antibiotics hurt whilst needle was going in but only for 1 minute. Cystoscopy again only hurt first minute. Could see a camera with it in on and yes was told results and could see myself. Obviously they can't be a 100% without a biopsy but they can see if there's signs like tumours. They gave me a local with gel. Not really any big deal pain wise. Mine took maybe 30 mins in all but normally quicker and that's including the chats.

Hysterscopy was much worse and I have another one on 13th, lucky me. Hope your cystoscopy comes back clear.

I didn't get any stinging afterwards but think you can do, if you get utis its best to have the antibiotics.

makingmiracles · 04/03/2018 12:27

I’ve never had utis and they is no evidence of infection in my urine, this referral was because of visible hematuria

You shouldn't need the antibiotics then.

Tanfastic · 04/03/2018 14:35

My referral was because of what appeared to be antibiotic resistant uti and invisible blood in urine.

Mine didn't sting after, maybe a very very slight discomfort for the first wee but hardly noticeable. Your cystoscopy will be for similar reason to mine then.

They couldn't find any reason for mine, had a good nosey round, showed me and explained the ins and outs of my bladder (quite interesting) Grin and then said no further action, all is fine and it was just normal for me (some people just do have the non visible blood for no reason). I also had a bladder and kidney scan a few weeks after which was also normal. Normally they do the scans first and the more invasive tests after but they got my notes mixed up and mine was the opposite way round.

Chrisinthemorning · 04/03/2018 14:37

Thank you for this - I have microscopic haematuria and may end up needing one of these.
Good luck OP

lazymum99 · 04/03/2018 18:27

I had the bladder and kidney scans first and then a cystoscopy for recurring UTIs. They found nothing and then after having had 4 UTIs in about 3 months i have had none since! No idea why that happened. Having the full bladder for the scan and to test if you're emptying it etc was very uncomfortable. He pushed down to scan my overflowing bladder!
The cystoscopy stung when they put it in and the first couple of wees hurt a bit. I think there was some blood on the paper. It was made hugely more embarrassing by having a period at the same time though!

Tanfastic · 04/03/2018 19:03

I found the worst bit was the legs akimbo and feeling exposed to be honest more than any pain I felt. Same with a smear!

Penguinsandpandas · 04/03/2018 19:31

Yes it was quite high on embarrassment factor - injection in bottom with old male doctor watching, legs apart then doing cystoscopy then after having him put two fingers inside me and ask me to squeeze to feel his fingers. Blush Plus I had my period, all very elegant. But at least I will never see them again.

Tanfastic · 04/03/2018 19:37

Oh no penguins! 😂

HereBeFuckery · 04/03/2018 19:43

Yes, but they couldn't do the flexible one so had to have (quick) GA for rigid one.
Tbh, no pain at all with either, but the registrar was saying my urethra was too small to do the flexible and didn't want to cause pain!
No pain after rigid one, just tired from GA.
Good luck!

Twotabbycats · 05/03/2018 01:26

I had one under general because the doctor wanted to take biopsies. He said that as I was nervous it would be better to do it under general. Had a catheter in for a few hours afterwards (which was more uncomfortable than the foot surgery in which my ankle was sawn through!). It stung when I weed a few times but went off quite quickly. Not in U.K. though. Can't believe they make you stay awake for a hysteroscopy Confused
