General health

Is this ‘something’ or just weight related.

I have put on weight over the last couple of years. In recent years, I have been size 12-14 but over the last two years, I’ve gone up to an 18. Had quite a difficult couple of years with mental health problems due to both parents dying in fairly quick succession. However, mental health currently OK other than that I am drinking a bit too much when I don’t have work the next day and not being happy with my weight.

Since October - when my mum died - I have found myself very short of breath, (I have had asthma for years and this is not like tight chest asthma plus I got to the point where I rarely use my inhaler). I get very out of breath just walking from one room to another and sometimes when I am just sitting down. I also stopped eating meat in September.

Could my breathlessness just be because I’m overweight and unfit, or do I need to see a doctor? Could it be because I stopped eating meat? I am wanting to do more exercise, but I can’t because I am so out of breath!

Not to worry you too much OP, but this was me last year.
To cut a long story short, if your heart is racing disproportionately with almost no effort and you are struggling to breathe, please see GP urgently as When I finally did, I almost collapsed in the surgery.
GP couldn’t get blood pressure and got ECG...I had large blood clots in my lungs (Pulmonary Embolism),an enlarged heart and fluid on my lungs.
I had blood thinners and a week in hospital and am now OK and my heart is back to normal. But your symptoms do sound very much like mine, certainly worth having it ruled out. If could of course be anxiety but a simple blood test can rule out blood clots.
Take care.

Have you seen the GP?

You sound like my dd. She isn’t overweight but has anxiety.
The dr asked her if she was getting out of breath when she was sitting down.
Because she was was she said it was stress/anxiety related and my dd was over breathing.
We were concerned about a blood clot due to the pill but the dr said she would be breathless when she moved rather than sitting down.

Hope you have made it to the GP now.
I have suffered with mental health issues and weight gain. It’s so tough. But that level of breathlessness does sound unusual

Iv had this, it came on very suddenly and turned out to be anxiety. I had high blood pressure and a fast heart rate. Get it checked out I hope everything turns out ok for you op.

Little update...just been to see the nurse at my doctor’s practice. I’ve recently moved back to my home town, so this is at my old GP - they know my family history etc. My blood pressure was a little high and I told them about the breathing - will be having tests for COPD next week. Hopefully I will get some answers soon. I’ve also had a referral for Slimming World to help get my weight back to how it was. Thanks for all of your replies.
