What food do you give your child after a stomach bug?

Child (age 4) had bad stomach flu (S&D) It's on way out now and she is regaining appetite. What foods are best to give her that won't irritate stomach apart for toast? I gave her cream of tomato soup yesterday (foolishly) as it's her fave but she vomited it straight up. Can anyone guide me on more suitable foods Thanks

You can make apple sauce in 10-15 minutes if you are so inclined and have a few apples and a tap... add a sprinkle of brown sugar if the apples aren't the sweetest, not necessary with sweet eating apples.

I do have jars of it in the cupboard - we have it on pancakes or even potato cakes sometimes. We live in an EU country where it is also a fairly staple kids/ quick food.

Not saying anyone has to eat apple sauce, but that if someone asks for advice and doesn't understand it they could simply ask for the reason behind that advice. Writing "wtf" is a pretty bloody rude response to advice you've actually asked for!

Plain Jacobs cream crackers good too

Evelyn, yes, I am from an applesauce country too Grin

Stellini (little pasta stars) cooked in a broth made with a chicken stock cube.

Or a baked potato.

“It's not something most people have lying about though.”

If you have an an apple, you are 10 minutes from apple sauce!

I'm obviously weird to have a freezer full of apple sauce Grin but I would say that was too acidic straight after a bug.

I'd stick to rice and plain chicken, then move on to mashed potato and and scrambled egg. As others have said, avoid dairy. My mother (who is a bit bonkerz) used to give us yogurt...she later said it was a test to see if we were still poorly Hmm

Small mounts of water regularly (1whisky measure every 15 mins) as too much liquid might come flying back up.

My DM always gave us chicken noodle soup and toast but also anything we fancied, which was usually jelly babies for me. I do the same for my kids. If they’re sick I ask if they fancy anything and we go from there. And I always whip up chicken noodle soup, the broth is so easy on the stomach.

I always start with plain water or highly dilute squash, then a plain biscuit and/or a small bit of toast either plain or with a smear of honey or marmite on it, no butter. Another good one to try is plain cereal e.g. cheerios. No milk, just a small handful of the cereal. This is good because the child is not putting too much into their mouths (and stomachs) at once so it is gentle. I then move on to plain potato with something plain from the family meal, e.g. a bit of chicken or some carrot. No dairy, no sauces, nothing rich.

If the child is small and still has a milk heavy diet, I used to dilute the milk with water for the first few days of having it. I've no idea if that is advisable, it was just my caution.

I won't bother next time Hmm

It's just stewed apple.

Ragusa · 02/03/2018 17:41

I just give then what they are asking for, aside from milk in case of one of my kids who tends to get transitory lactose intolerance after a bug.

davidbyrneswhitesuit · 02/03/2018 17:52

Love this OP - please tell me what to feed my child - lots of people "apple sauce is good - pectin = anti inflammatory, pre biotic, etc". OP "wtf". So glad I bothered, too.

Ready salted crisps. Tasty, replaces salt, full of carbs and not too grim if they chuck up.
