Nausea, vomiting, severe pain and some diarrhoea. Diagnose me please!

My thread title is tongue in cheek as I know you can't diagnose me but I would appreciate any ideas or experiences you've had as I'm at a loss.

I've had nausea and vomiting with mild to severe upper abdominal pain and some diarrhoea for 2 months.
The pain is so bad that early on I was admitted to hospital, via my GP, for pain relief and fluids early in mid January.

In hospital I had a chest x ray and an endoscopy, both of which drew a blank.
So I was referred back to the GP for symptom management.
This is fine except that I'm a generally healthy woman in my mid 40s, I don't have a diagnosis and although it is being managed up to a point it is showing no signs of abating.

I am intermittently nauseous every day and sick most days, even though I am taking prescriptions antiemetics.
Loperamide makes the pain significantly worse so instead I have been prescribed painkillers which also slow my digestive system and have also slowed the diarrhoea.

Despite the strong painkillers I am still experiencing a lot of upper abdominal pain, this is worse when I feel nauseous or am being sick.
The pain prevents me from getting to sleep and wakes me up in the night.

I've cut right back on dairy, I'm allowing myself the occasional cup of tea, fewer than one a day, with a dash of milk but coffee is almost guaranteed to make me sick.
I can keep down clear fluids and the nausea abates for long enough for me to eat twice a day so I'm not dehydrated or losing weight too quickly.
It's just that I'm fed up with feeling like this all of the time, I'm tired and I can't exercise at all.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a possible diagnosis? Or has experienced similar and found anything helped?
I have private medical insurance so I can fund further investigations but these would need a GP referral and I would need to know which investigations to ask my GP for.

gall stones?

WhatCould · 01/03/2018 12:39

Gallstones are a possibility, I don't have any of the more serious symptoms.

They took bloods in hospital and my infection markers were ok, bilirubin was on the high side of normal.

It took doctors ages and a couple of a&e visits to diagnose my dad. I'd told him I thought he had them early on as the symptoms were similar to mine. The doctors were so convinced it was stomach ulcers or such like they completely missed the gall stones.
My pain wasn't where the text books said it should be. It was more central.

WhatCould · 01/03/2018 12:59

I'm sorry your Dad suffered like that, if the pain was anything like mine it can be excruciating.

It sounds similar to my experience in that the hospital were looking for stomach ulcers.
I'll see whether I can persuade my GP to write me an open referral so I can use my medical insurance for an ultrasound scan.

Would I be correct in thinking that gallstones can sometimes be present or not, depending on whether they have moved?

I'm not sure. Mine were gravel like and were just on the cusp of being infected.

I have my gallbladder removed due to infection and gallstones (as an emergency op and I'm currently on sick from acute pancreatitis caused by a gallstone left behind. Before diagnosis I had pain, severe diarrhoea and vomiting intermittently for a few months.
Gallbladder pain is a burning pain that lasts a long time that sits right in the centre or right of your upper abdomen just about where your ribs end. I describe as a hot coal working it's way from the front of the body to the back. It causes pain in the upper back near your shoulders.
If it gets really bad please go to A&E - I had no clue about my gallbladder went to A&E was admitted, had CT scan and 3 days later had my op....

Could it be cysts in small intestines? It can cause nausea and vomiting and all other symptoms you describe.

WhatCould · 01/03/2018 13:17

Thank you ejk, it sounds similar. I hope you're well now.

Twofish would cysts have been visible on the endoscopy?

It's gallstones

WeaselsRising · 01/03/2018 14:13

My DS had similar symptoms for months and months and it turned out to be kidney related.

WhatCould · 01/03/2018 14:44

I don't think it's a kidney thing as the pain is so high up and my urine is fine.
Though at this stage anything is worth considering.

I'll talk to my GP about a scan for kidney stones first I think.

Let us know how you get on. I want to see if I'm right

WhatCould · 01/03/2018 19:46

I will do snews but it may be a while as my GP isn't keen on me having any further investigations.
