Help with thyroid blood results

Hi all,
Recently seen my GP as feeling totally rubbish, weight gain, dry hair, nails cracking and bending like they’re just soft, dry flaky skin, dry red eyes, really heavy periods etc Sad
However, as soon as I got in there and started explaining starting with the tiredness and feeling like my brain is sludge he saw that I’d previously been anaemic and didn’t even let me finish speaking Sad
Had a blood test showing ferritin within their normal range but on the low side (6), he reluctantly tested thyroid and my TSH is 2.7 and FT4 is 10.5. Both of these are within their labs normal ranges but have read some things saying that above 2 for TSH should be investigated more?
Does anyone know if these results are worth insisting on them doing a full screen or not? I just feel like the symptoms fit but I know part of me is just hoping there’s a reason for feeling this rubbish- feels 100x worse than when I was anaemic previously!
Thanks for any help!

It’s in the normal range but you could ask for the thyroid anti bodies to be checked?

You could also check you vitamin d levels - if they are low it can be similar to hypothyroid symptoms- the main cross over being fatigue.

Vit D was normal, as was b12 and a FBC so I was pretty puzzled. Yes I may well ask for antibodies actually, I just hate to be that difficult patient that comes back insisting on something else being done so wanted some opinions Blush

We would need to see the reference ranges for those results to be able to advise you properly. That's the two figures in brackets after your actual result.

However your ferritin looks so low that it would certainly give you symptoms of fatigue.

The reference ranges given were TSH 7-17 and TSH 0.2-4

What was the ref range for ferritin? 8 could be very low.

You're hypothyroid. Your TSH is not as high as I would expect with an FT4 that low, but with FT4 well into the bottom half of the range, you are definitely already hypothyroid, possibly with some pituitary involvement. Three things to do:

(1) Ask your GP to check TPO and Tg antibodies.
(2) If he won't, get a private test done. The good people at the ThyroidUK forum on www.healthunlocked.com will be able to tell you how.
(3) Ask your GP what he is going to do about your ferritin. If it is below range, as seems likely, he should ideally refer you for an infusion. If he won't do that, he should offer oral supplements, but they can take years to raise your levels.

Good luck.

ferritin of 8 is very low. Reference range is in my are 15-200 (or even 250). I felt awful when mine was 20. GP put me on iron and said I would need at least 50-60 to feel ok again. Took a few months of 3x 200mg ferrous sulphate to push it up. I had several of the the symptoms you describe.

Cannot help with the thyroid stuff though.

Thanks all, the ref range for ferritin was 5-85 so was just above at 6. Been prescribed ferrous sulphate 2x200mg a day currently.
Thanks @timeistight that’s really helpful advice, I will try getting another appointment and speak to them! I had seen some of the at Home blood test kits (read on the thyroid UK site so assumed they would be legit!) but didn’t want to spend that if I was just being paranoid about it Blush

I couldn't function with ft4 and ferritin that low! Hope your GP follows this up with ft3 and thyroid antibody check...

He wasn’t planning on itConfused all he said is they were within range, I had to go in and insist the receptionist printed the results out to see what they were myself!

GPs are not great re thyroid function in my experience. When I was first diagnosed my tsh was 11 something and I was told that was sub clinical. The endocrinologist disagreed however and I got treatment. Get yourself referred.
