Hi there My dd has had a flu type virus for just over a week now. She was really really unwell with constant sleeping, conjunctivitis, no eating, really unwell. Anyway yesterday morning she got up with about 10 spots on her body and one on her head. Took her to the gp who said lets treat it as chicken pox but wasnt sure. No more spots have appeared and she is 100% better since the spots came out. Can anyone advise. Took her to the gp as she was put on antibiotics due to ear infection and I was worried it was a reaction to that. Also my other dd is 4 and doesnt seem to have any symptoms at all, will she get it????? Would have thought after 9 days of dd being ill she would have had it. Sorry rambling now.

It does sound like chicken pox. My dd came out in the spots yesterday - about ten too, but today there are lots more appearing. She's got really runny nose, hacking cough and temp.

I've heard lots of kids feel better when the spots are out, so it could well be that.

Piriton syrup is supposed to help, eurax if the spots itch.

Second children can get it about 2 weeks - 21 days after the first child does, so i'm also waiting for my dd1 to break out in a couple of weeks.

Oh joy. I cant take any more things happening. Just got my first dogs plaster cast off and she is allowed out after 7 weeks when my second dog has some kind of illness and she is in the doggy hsspital, dd has not been well at all, nephew had suspected broken ankle and was rushed to hospital, ,mum and dad moving house today and I am soooooo stressed. Oh I just cant wait for dd2 to get ill. Yippee.

its possible that the flu symptoms was her incubaion period. As the spots have just shown up in the last 24hrs I would give it until at least Mon - Tues to see if more come through. It can take 5-6 days to fully come out. Incubation in yuor 4yr old dd may be up to 20 days from seeing the 1st spots on your other dd. Or it could be sooner , or she may not even get it this time around.

Good luck with it , I have remedies galore for soothing, Ive just gone through 4 weeks of it in my house with my 2 girls.

sorry boco for repeating some of that , posting takes me ages !!

singyswife · 04/05/2007 10:45

Thats the strange thing, she doesnt seem to be bothered by them in the slightest, she has one under her arm which her cloithes are rubbing on but other than that they are not itching, they are not hot, nothing, this is why I was wondering if they were chicken pox. Will she be back at school on wed?????

They may not be itchy yet , unfortunately that can take some days too , sorry to be bearer of bad news. The guidlines I believe are to wait until they are ALL scabbed over before mixing with others.

melsy · 04/05/2007 10:48

They do not always come out as blisters intially, but change as the days go on. dd2 '2 started the same , smooth little red spots , then they blistered .

Although saying that in some cases they dont get bothersome and 10- 15 spots is all they get.

singyswife · 04/05/2007 10:48

Okay then, thanks guys. Will take it a day at a time then. Cheers.

Hi, it is blisters she has. Started yesterday morning with the same amount as she has now. Oh the joys of children!!!!!!!!!!!

That sounds like a long time to have the fluey symptoms to me. I thought it was more like 24-48 hours of fever, aches then the spots appear.

What do the spots look like? I find chickenpox very distinctive, like little water blisters, slightly pinkish around the edges. Is she developing more all the time? They don't really itch I think until they start to scab over. So day 2 or so.

If it is full-on chickenpox and she's only just got the spots she probably won't be back at school next Wednesday. My GP advised keeping dd off for 5 days after the last spots appeared. The spots take 3-5 days to all come out after the first ones arrive.

yawningmonster · 04/05/2007 10:52

If it isn't chicken pox, some other virus' do end with a rash as well and is just the end of the virus cycle. If this is the case they won't blister and unlikely that more will keep erupting.

singyswife · 04/05/2007 10:52

Yeah it was a really long time she was ill for. I had her at the gp 3 times, felt like a completely neurotic mother. Last weekend she literally slept all weekend. I was really worried, kept going up and cheking her all the time. Poor child. She is still playing the "Im not well" card even though she is soooo much better now.

Could be she had a virus adn her immune system was a bit washed out and got chicken pox too? Dd had a cough for a couple of weeks before this, and i think she was just run down.

singyswife · 04/05/2007 10:57

Yeah I think this is what has happened but I dont know of ANYONE in our area with chicken pox, very strange.

My three had c/p one after the other, and I heard that the severity alternates between children. ie if the first has lots of spots, the second will have significantly less and so on. It was certainly true in my children's case. I thought nothing of it, just different children - different reactions. Anyone else heard of this strange theory? By the way,my dd1 got it again a year later!

rosealbie · 04/05/2007 11:07

I had heard that each sibling will get it worse as they have in effect been in contact with the virus for longer. Certainly true for a friend of mine whose 3 boys had it last year one after the other. Not sure if this was just a coincidence though!

singyswife · 04/05/2007 20:13

Okay after everytging I said about my second dd she has just vomited all over my livingroom. Is this the start of her chickenpox????

Children usually suffer from flu-like symptoms at first - not perhaps sickness - unless she has a temperature/fever??

singyswife · 04/05/2007 20:30

Oh I dont know then. dd1 was very ill with fluey symptoms and vomiting. I really dont think my week can get any worse. Would have aglass of wine but suspect I may be up in the middle of the night with children.

My dd now has what looks like conjunctivitis on top of chicken pox, and behind her ear one of her glands is sticking out the size of a marble, it's horrible!

She's got more spots than not now, poor baby, her back is absolutely covered, and her scalp. It's going to be a very long weekend!
