bumped baby teeth gone black

Hi. ds5 bumped his teeth 3 weeks ago when falling off a chair. His gums bled and were swollen. He was left with a wobbly tooth. I took him to dentist, who said he won't know if big teeth damaged until they come down. my other son, age 7.5 has just lost his top teeth,so is late to do so. Because of this, the chances are higher than ds5 roots are still long, and will have banged and damaged his new teeth in gum.
Now in the last couple of days I can see that they are discolored, and I fear they are going black .
Please can anyone tell me if this has happened to them, and if I stand any chance of his new big teeth being ok.
The dentist wanted to see him again in 3 months.
I had I posted about this a while ago, in panic! but can't find thread.

my sister bumped one of her teeth at about 5 and it went black. When her second set came through they weren't affected.

There are a couple of dentists here hopefully they will see this.

I bumped my baby teeth and one went black - new tooth grew through perfectly fine!

If it's any help ds2 bit the climbing frame at nursery knocking his front tooth up. It went a greyish colour. The dentist said we'd have to wait and see what happened when the new tooth appears. Then about 2 years later ds2 knocked that tooth clean out of his mouth when he ran into another child at school (feel that tooth was doomed). He then walked around toothless for 2 years while we watched and waited, and when it did finally appear it was as normal as it would ever be because all his teeth are mottled through antibiotics when he was a baby. So, ultimately not affected by all the trauma.

that's reassuring to hear, thanks!
Dentist said he musn't wobble it because it may be making it bang on the new one in the gum. he had said that if he does, he would have to take it out. Funny enough dh and i said to each other just tonight - 'he'll have a gap for 2 years if that has to come out'.
I just feel awful about it really.
And I can't imagine how they could possibly get him to sit still to take it out, and NOt be traumatised over it, that makes me feel awful too!

my ds1 (4) fell off our slide 2 days ago and had blood around one of his top front teeth, he wouldn't let me touch it so i took him to the dentist next am. She informed me both were loose and they would both be going black and fall out. (she said both would happen very quickly as once the tooth is loose the blood suply has been distrupted and as the roots aren't very long the tooth dies and starts to change colour)
as the bottom front teeth weren't loose yet he was quite a way off the top teeth being ready to fall out.

  1. it might take longer for the adult teeth to come through
  2. adult teeth might not come through at right angle and need corrective treatment later. (but the impact couldn't have been that hard or else the teeth would have just fallen out)

she said there was no point x-raying as there was nothing they could do until the adult teeth come through.

I must have looked horrified as she offered to see him again in 2 months. I've had a chat to ds explained what might happen and not to be concerned if they do go black, he understands his tooth might be dying and if it does it will fall out before it should have done and it will take a while for the new tooth to come down.

the important thing is your ds is certainly not alone and you have to not worry. lol (is that possible? not worrying for us mums?)

Thanks Samwhite, your story is like mine! blinkin' kids! I'm reassured to hear what the dentist told you. I'll perhaps phone dentist again next week, and see if he needs to see him. He was adamant he shouldn't wobble it, else he would take it out, he didn't mention at all about it going black.
thanks
BTW he is ds age 5, not number 5! (3 of them is enough!)

This happened to my ds when he was about 3, tooth went black, it fell out as normal when he was about 6 and the adult tooth grew though normally.
