Wretched cough

I have a post viral (or something) cough. Very dry, extremely persistent, probably inflammation caused by coughing causing more coughing. It’s been about a week.

Last time I had it it lasted for 3 months, I became depressed, and it affected my work. This time I’ve got a baby who I bedshare with. She’s just about used to my cough after a week of it stressing her out, but it wakes her up in the night so neither of us get any sleep. DH is away with work for the next month.

I’ve been to the GP when I’ve had it before (two different GPs) and they were very dismissive and told me to wait to get over it in time (which I did to be fair...) I know this is the response I’ll get if I go again.

I’ve tried all of the usual remedies but am now staring into a black hole of potentially months of no sleep and no social contact (I can’t go to baby groups coughing like this, and I’m very bad company at the moment)

Having not really stopped coughing for more than 30 seconds since about 4pm, I’m now sat at the kitchen table steaming myself over a bowl of hot water feeling utterly miserable and wondering if anyone has any magic cough remedies they can recommend?! I got close to the end of my tether last time - I really don’t want to get to that point again...

Have you tried Piriton?

Older type antihistamines can suppress the cough reflex, not something you'd want to do for a productive cough, but ok for a dry one.

Might not be the best idea with cosleeping though as can make you sleepier than normal. However I tried it for my cough last week, I only took half the adult dose and it worked all night and the next day.

Thanks hadn’t thought of that! I don’t suffer from allergies so it isn’t in my medicine cabinet. I’ll try it during the day - I think I just need to have a break from the coughing to let my throat recover. Thanks again!

Stop dairy for a couple of weeks? Might reduce the inflammation?

I feel your pain, I have had a horrendous cough for a week. I'm so tired from the lack of sleep. This virus has floored me!
I will get some piriton tomorrow and give it a go, thank you for the suggestion. Fingers crossed.

Did the Piriton work? I've been coughing since yesterday evening hardly stopped. I've had zero sleep and my head and ribs hurt so much. I'm keeping everyone awake at night and it's really getting me down. Tried the steaming over a towel, linctus, Lemsip and so on. It's a dry tickle cough and I just want to open my throat up and scratch like fuck!! Sad

It didn’t seem to do anything - I’m still really suffering. Although I’ve not peed myself from coughing it now feels like I’m about to cough my cervix out. Absolutely miserable. Planning to soldier on till April then go to the docs.

Oh dear Princess, get to the docs sooner than April, thats ages off. Since my last post I've lost 7lb in weight which I could of done with anyway. 2 lots of antibiotics and steroids and now on inhalers all because of a feckin virus. Cost me a bloody fortune in prescriptions as well, ended up on the yearly planner. It's been a nasty virus this, everyone at work had it. I seem to be clearing up on day 2 of second lot of antibiotics though. Hope you get sorted soon Flowers
