Has anyone been to the GP for tiredness?

I'm a bit worried I'll be laughed at or accused of wasting time.. I know I'm supposed to be tired, I have young DC and a stressful job...

But I am REALLY tired.. as in the rare moment I get time to myself I don't do anything, just lie on the sofa. That's not really like me. I can't ever go out in the evening because I'm too exhausted and chores permitting I'll go to bed as soon as the DC are asleep.

Aside from sleeping I try to combat tiredness by drinking berocca. I also drink tea and Pepsi (not great I know) but otherwise quite a healthy diet. Healthy weight and quite physically active although I don't get much time for proper exercise.

Is it silly to make an appointment?

Go and ask for blood tests so they can check things like your iron level.

DownstairsMixUp · 24/02/2018 22:14

No. They will probably ask for a blood test and check your iron levels

EmyRoo · 24/02/2018 22:14

No, not silly, GP will run blood tests. The most obvious cause is anaemia, which is iron-deficiency. Berocca does not have iron, I don’t think.
Hope you feel better soon!

Wolfcub · 24/02/2018 22:15

I’d ask for your vit d levels to be checked too.

carinwashingmachine · 24/02/2018 22:16

Thanks. I was anaemia during my pregnancies but haven't been tested since.

Sounds worth getting tested.

anaemic

Foodylicious · 24/02/2018 22:17

Yep, go and get your bloods done.
They will check all sorts in folate, vit d, thyroid and if you have room deficiency anaemia

MissisBoote · 24/02/2018 22:17

Not at all

All sorts of things could be responsible for this.
Vit d, b12 or iron.
Have you had the flu this year? Or a virus that's taking a while to shake off?

3girlsmama · 24/02/2018 22:18

As well as Vitamin D, Iron and B12 definitely get thyroid function blood tests (Google hypothyroidism to see if it rings any bells).

carinwashingmachine · 24/02/2018 22:18

Not flu but regular colds and stomach bugs unfortunately..

I did. Turns out I was massively anemic.

MummySparkle · 24/02/2018 22:21

I was coming to say make sure you ask for a thyroid blood test too.

bonzo77 · 24/02/2018 22:24

Yep. Waiting on blood tests for loads of things: thyroid, diabetes. Vit d, b12. Folate. Anaemia, others too. And some other markers as I had a big gynae infection with sepsis last year. Makes me tired just thinking about it!

2old2beamum · 24/02/2018 22:26

Yes I did, blood test revealed hyperparathyroidism (too much calcium) and low vit D. I was exhausted to say the least. Easily sorted with minor op to remove a benign tumour from parathyroid gland and extra vit D.
Good luck.

letsdolunch321 · 24/02/2018 22:28

Definitely get bloods done at hosp/docs. I felt similar to you by sounds of it .... bloods were done I am deficient in Vit B, Vit D & Folic. On vitamins for 6 mths, re-test of bloods due April to see if vitamins have helped.

Good luck

carinwashingmachine · 24/02/2018 22:29

Thanks everyone.

B12 blood test

Frazzled2207 · 25/02/2018 10:50

Tiredness for me turned out to be down to under active thyroid, broadly sorted with thyroxin drugs these days. Def ask to check out your thyroid, among other things

Rowgtfc72 · 25/02/2018 17:19

I had all sorts of blood tests. All negative. Doctor pointed at my livewire Dd and said "there's your problem!"

Hithere1981 · 25/02/2018 17:24

So many serious illnesses - the main symptom is tiredness

Not to say you have something serious but my point is absolutely not daft to go to Doc over tiredness

I went. underactive thyroid

Ollivander84 · 25/02/2018 17:30

I did twice
First time I was really anaemic and actually fell asleep having my bloods done Blush
Second time I was diagnosed with neutropenia

carinwashingmachine · 25/02/2018 17:56

Thanks. I will get it checked out. I'm sorry to hear others have had serious issues diagnosed. I have no particular other symptoms other than catching every bug and regular (but fairly mild) headaches.

waves @2old2beamum
Going to message you

mumof06darlings · 01/03/2018 13:43

I have gone to the Dr with tiredness and she told me that most of her patients call in with that problem so I promise you won't be laughted at and it's such a valid symptom to get checked out. It's so important to get bloods done regularly anyways
