Well, the title says it all. Poor ds has spent a week trying to do a poo. I have given him sennakot under the instruction of a pharmacist but all he can do is pass very small amounts of soft stuff. He is in a lot of pain and desperate to have a proper poo. Any ideas? I'm going to try and see gp tomorrow but would be grateful if anyone could offer any ideas here. Thanks

have you tried suppositories? they can be very helpful, although I don't know how suitable for very young children they are. No doubt you are trying all the right things from a dietary point of view -plenty of water, fruit etc.I'm sure the GP will sort him out though - hopefully a couple of difficult poos then he will be ok.My dd is 3 in November and I find orange juice makes her tummy runny so paybe you could try that.

Have you tried dried apriocots, lots of water and fruit/veg?

thing is ds is a very faddy eater and at the moment is shunning all veg and fruit. I have given him lots of oj though and taken him off milk (none for 4 days). Is it constipation when he is passing small amounts of stuff? Usually when he is constipated he can only produce really hard poos, these ones are like soft cheese.

Are suppositries avaiable overthe counter?

done some research, it's a condition called encopresis and failry common. Hope we can see the gp tomorrow, I cant bear to watch ds in pain again for another day.

Lactulase is fantastic. It's a sugar solution which is a gentle laxative and not as strong as sennakot. It's even recommended for babies. I'm surprised your pharmacist didn't recommend it. In fact, I'm just remembering after my CS I needed some help and the nurse gave me Fibogel and Lactulase separately saying they were the most gentle and natural.

Thanks Chicpea, I have a doctors appt at 9.50 so I will ask about lactulose. Ds often has some consipation so it is something I should have to hand really.
