Borderline changes smear - wait 3 years for retest?

I had a smear a couple of weeks ago and got the results this morning. I have borderline changes but negative HPV.

The letter says the next smear will be in 3 years.

Can anyone reassure me this is normal to wait 3 years for a retest following a borderline change in a smear?

I guess I'm anxious as in my 20s I had a LLETZ following abnormal smears and 3 years feels a long time to wait!

I had the same. Went to see Doctor at FP clinic. Can't say I'm totally at peace with it but it's based on statistical risk analysis.

Thanks dumble - sorry to hear you had similar. Having googled it sounds as though there is a good chance the cells will return to normal.

One thing is for sure I won't be missing my smear in 3 years time!

The Doc said to me could be mild infection or hormonal. Still worrying though x

Hi Bertie. This happened to me 4 years ago. Borderline changes and no HPV and retest in 3 years. I felt the same as you. Pleased to report that next smear was completely clear! Hope that helosFlowers

Your body will likely correct the abnormal cells itself.
Any changes in cervical cells can take between 10-15 years to develop into anything nasty so 3 years wait is fine :)
