Why are my lips so dry?

HannahRo · 23/02/2018 20:21

My lips are so sore and dry...on my bottom lip I have just a red line extending below where my lip ends as they are that sore! They've been really dry, sore, and sometimes irritate/itch. I've tried Vaseline and Blistex. They haven't worked. I'm getting embarrassed having this red soreness and dryness visible below my lips...can anyone recommend anything, or tell me why my lips are like this? Any suggestions I'm glad to try

Really sorry I have no suggestions but just following as my lips are like this at the minute too, it's so sore! I feel your pain Sad

I get this. You are under the weather and possibly dehydrated and the weather is cold. Vit C in huge doses. Lots of water. Moisturise your whole face often, get a very good lip balm and don’t leave the the house without slavering your whole jaw in it 😊

Foolish1 · 23/02/2018 20:31

Drink more water.

Ploppymoodypants · 23/02/2018 20:37

Yep dehydrated. I used to get this all the time in the winter. For years, and use loads of blisteze and Vaseline etc and could t understand it. Until a kind cheats told me it was dehydration. Upped the water and never had it again 😊

Ploppymoodypants · 23/02/2018 20:37

Chemist! Not cheat?! Goodness knows where that came from?

Flomy · 23/02/2018 20:38

Cold weather

HannahRo · 23/02/2018 20:39

Okay, I will try and just drink loads of water and see if there is any improvement! It sounds so stupid because it's just sore lips, but it's getting painful, irritating and unsightly now...thank you so much for all your suggestions! I'll take Vit C tablets as well just for extra defence

I second dehydration. Also try Carmex in the little jar. I couldn’t live without it.

LoveB · 23/02/2018 20:44

You need Nivea!!! Use the dark blue lip salve stick (it's amazing) or get the big blue tub of cream, I use that on my lips all the time (it's amazing too)

HannahRo · 23/02/2018 20:45

That's good idea...haven't tried Carmex yet! I'll go into boots tomorrow and grab myself a jar, fingers crossed it works

As others have said, it's usually dehydration. But now it's chapped it needs something, I use 8 hour cream and it's excellent for chapped bits

notsureifimbeingur · 23/02/2018 20:47

I have this when I eat too much bread ( wheat/gluten/ yeast) allergy, not sure which. But yea the big blue Nivea cream sorts it out, but it goes completely when I don’t eat bread products.

ButteredScone · 23/02/2018 20:48

You are dehydrated - and probably coming down with a cold.

If you are able to to get to a Kiehls them they have the most fantastic restorative lip balm here which will really improve things. I can’t be without it.

MooMummy12 · 23/02/2018 20:49

Drink more water but try a cocoa butter lip balm. I've got one (from bodycare about £1ish) it's better than any other one I've had including Nivea :)

PerfectlyDone · 23/02/2018 20:50

It's called lip licking dermatitis.

Use emollient/chapstick of your choice many, many times/day (if Vaseline did not help then try something that is not based on mineral oil)
Stop licking your lips - every time you feel like licking put more stuff on.
Drink lots.
Make sure you cover your lips in whatever you are using last thing at night.

I rate Labello Med and the Nivea lip salves, Burt's Bees is also popular.

KochabRising · 23/02/2018 20:50

Drink more water
Humidifier if your house is dry
Use moisturiser on your lips, not lip balm, lip balm just sets off a cycle of drying. You need to keep reapplying a high fat moisturiser like decubal
Vitamin b group deficiencies can cause dry and cracked lips.

PerfectlyDone · 23/02/2018 21:19

Oh, Lansiloh nipple cream is great for lips btw (as long as you are not allergic to lanolin).

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 23/02/2018 21:24

8 hour cream is the best. First moisturise your lips when you do the rest of your face, then apply 8 hour cream over that.

Obviously never lick your lips, especially in this cold weather.

And make sure to drink plenty, and maybe take some Primrose oil (which oddly works if I have dry eyes or lips).

brownelephant · 23/02/2018 21:24

it's the cold.
that dries out the skin.
try putting on normal face moisturiser followed by a richer cream (nivea blue pot, vaseline...)
