Laryngitis?

I’m hoping someone will read this and be able to share a miracle cure?

I have been completely fine all day - had a really great day in fact! About an hour after I put my DSs (3 & 1.5) to bed this evening, I suddenly had a bit of a sore throat - and then my husband phoned and I realised, I could no longer speak?! I can only whisper?! And even that is hard??

I’ve spent the evening googling and am now freaked out that I’ve somehow got laryngitis? I’ve never had anything like this before!

My husband is away until Sunday night and we have no family nearby.... please someone tell me there’s something I can buy first thing tomorrow that’s going to sort this out??

Thank you!!

Unfortunately not. The best thing you can do for laryngitis is rest your voice as much as possible and inhale steam (head over a bowl of hot water with a towel over). It should pass in a few days. X

Really?!?! Nothing else??

How on earth am I meant to deal with my children for the next three days on my own with no voice?!

Why would it come out of nowhere??

Sad

I had exactly this earlier in the year. It came on within the course of half a day and I lost my voice entirely. I wrote things on a pad for the kids! Took 4 or 5 days to get my voice back. Rest it as much as possible, apparently whispering strains it so try not to do that.

Oh just seen your kids are young. Try shaking bells or some sort of noisy toy to get their attention and use signs. If you get really desperate use a text to speech app on your phone. It's happened to me before when mine were very little and it's always when my DH is away! Sods law

kempymoo · 22/02/2018 22:27

Goodness... right. Neither of mine can read - the eldest is just over 3 and the youngest is 21 months. This is like some sort of terrible practical joke. Wish me luck, y’all!

Text to speech app is a good idea - thank you! Will find one now and figure out how to use it ready for my 5:30am “it’s not time to get up yet” chat!!!

maybe check accessibility settings on your phone? I think you can set up an iPhone to read out whatever is on screen

pollythedolly · 22/02/2018 22:49

Rest it. Avoid alcohol and spicy foods. I get this a lot and it's exhausting trying to talk (and frustrating!!)

Hope you feel better soon.

I had it a few weeks ago. Bit of a sore throat and then suddenly no voice at all. Rest and steam is definitely the way to go. I took it as my body telling me I really needed to stop and rest (had been struggling to shake off cold type thing for weeks, was manic at work) took three days offf (dc older so at school I appreciate this isn’t an option for you) and that cleared the laryngitis and the virus. A family member is a singer and she confirmed total voice rest is really the only thing you can do unfortunately.

This happened to me a couple of weeks back. I had a sore throat foe a couple of days then lost my voice.I had to take a couple of
days off work as I'm a teacher. Trouble is the sore throat hasn't gone even though my voice has come back so I've been advised to see my GP.

My son has it and a couple of friends too. It is another virus which makes rounds.
