Another daft question but how does the heat affect your little ones? My DS is 11 weeks and has been sleeping loads recently, until last week he was wide eyed and bushy tailed for most the day - but he has been awake for approx 4 hours today . . . could it be the heat?

I don't want to panic and yet I don't like to wake him as all the sleep must be for a reason Still can't help feeling this is out of character. He also doesn't cry much if hungry or if his nappy is dirty. However, his eye contact is really good and loves nothing more than gazing at DP (odd in itself!), is also really keen to belt merry hell out of his play gym so obviously aware those pesky dangly animals!

I realise that it could all normal and that maybe he is just having a growth spurt, I admit that I can also be pretty quick off the mark when he does get upset.

any ideas anyone?

That said, he has just woken himself and now has a right cob on!

Would still be interested to hear how the heat and growth spurts effect your little ones?

ds2 is eight months and he's been sleeping for longer and getting grumpy when normally he's smiley. He is also coming out of chicken pox though. He's also been off his food and I've been having to force feed him juice.

Just keep a list of what your ds is having and how much. Then if you decide to take him to the GP's you can say, he ate this much yesterday and so on...

libb, I cant remember what DS was like at that age but i'm sure that another mumsnetter will be on with some advice soon. For what it's worth, my DS is 3 and he has been sleeping much more since this heat.

Angeliz · 01/08/2004 17:48

My dd is 3.5, not eating much AND sleeping more in this heat!

(Can't remember that far back!!)

kbaby · 01/08/2004 19:20

Libb,

I know that we have days where DD sleeps all day. Its happened a couple of times since birth where she has slept the whole day, just waking for feeds. I was also worried like yourself as its so unusual but put it down to a growth spurt. Its happened to us now about 3-4 times and the next day its back to normal.

libmy ds is 11 months and has been getting tierd alot more i put it down to the heat because this heat is making me tired alot so presume the child is just going through the same as long as hes taking some bottle i would worry to much he might be a little run down with the change in the weather if so realy sleep is the best thing for him

libb · 01/08/2004 23:07

Thanks for all the responses - DS woke shortly after typing and hasn't settled for a moment since! cranky monkey.

Fell asleep on me at one point after his feed but woke the moment the moses basket loomed - he is clearly tired now but not going down. I feel like a right mug now!

I found that when mine did that 'sleeping for ages' thing, it was always during a growth spurt (obviously if there were no other symptoms). I used to worry too like you, but now with ds2 I've come to expect it and he delivers - just seems to get bigger overnight with these phases of long sleeps.

californiagirl · 02/08/2004 18:49

I used to worry exactly like that; DD would be perky, and then she'd have these days where she did nothing but sleep and eat for several days in a row, and I'd wonder how she could possibly get enough intellectual stimulation to grow, and why people said that babies her age should sleep 16 hours a day as if that was a lot, when she was doing over 20!

At her 4 month appointment, they briefly thought she was 6 months (chart confusion) and told me she was developmentally perfect but a bit small. So I guess it didn't do her any harm. It only ever lasted long enough to make me fret, anyway.

strangerthanfiction · 02/08/2004 20:45

libb, my dd did this quite often when very tiny. I'd always get worried and it would alway turn out to be nothing. She was born in winter though so it can't be entirely down to the heat.

Piffleoffagus · 02/08/2004 20:55

dd has been conking out and sleeping in for the last week, she is 21 mths and the heta has knocked her for six, we have a fan in her room since last night though and she is in the buff!
