Has anyone had an unusual period? Please reassure me!

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone here has experienced a long period out of the blue? For some background I had a miscarriage in July last year and my normal periods started again in November but heavier. I took a pack and a half of pills in January. February 1st had a light period for 4 days then a break for 3 days. Since then I've had spotting of light brown/pink. Sorry for TMI. This has happened since 9th Feb. I've googled everything I can find and most things point to hormonal issues like the pill etc. Then I came across cervical cancer- my smears have all been clear up to now but I was due one in August last year. Due to the miscarriage I was advised to wait a few months. I'm now terrified I have it - can it develop since the last clear smear test or could this period be a one off anomoly? Any help or advice much appreciated.

You should always get any unusual bleeding checked out just to be safe but I certainly wouldn't be panicking about cervical cancer at this stage! You've had a miscarriage AND have been taking contraception - both enough to upset your hormonal balance and your cycle. Fibroids, cysts (which can also be caused by hormone imbalance), cervical erosion, polyps etc can also cause erratic or heavy bleeding. Brown blood tends to be old so it's also possible your uterus is having a bit of a clear out before things settle! Speak to your GP and if they think it warrants further investigation they'll refer you for a scan. Upshot is, there's loads of benign reasons this could be happening. X

Ellen thank you very much for your response. I've been Googling like mad these last 2 weeks, the number one thing it throws up is hormonal reasons but I do generally have health anxiety so I tend to think worst case scenario. I'm hoping period irregularities are common x

Oh they certainly are, especially after what you've been through! I get health anxiety too, and the last several years since I had a c-section and the onset of peri-meno have thrown similar gynae issues my way - and all have turned out to be benign (if often painful & annoying - had surgery to remove a cyst and adhesions) and hormone related. Google is def useful up to a point! Once you wade through the guff and get past the cancer self-diagnoses, there is useful info on how to manage hormone imbalances if it doesn't resolve. I hope you get some answers and reassurance xx

Thanks so much Ellen! Very helpful and reassuring Smile . I'm sorry to hear of your problems but pleased everything is ok with you! It's the first time it's happened to me so I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully it's a one off x
