Tailbone pain

ashleighr1988 · 15/02/2018 13:40

It's been 8 months since I had my daughter and although I had some tailbone pain after, it kind of went away

However it is now randomly back and has got to the point we're I can't even sit down!

I have also been struggling with an anal fissure and wonder if they are connected!

Unsure of who to talk to as just fobbed off by GP and was wondering if there is any advice out there!

I have had it for 2 years. Took me ages to get a referral to a MSK specialist who then referred me to the pain clinic. I had my first steroid injection a year ago. That took the pain from a 10 to a 2 for about 6 months then it increased back to a 10. Had my 2nd steroid injection yesterday and hopefully it works again. If you get pain when you stand from a sitting position it's probably the tailbone - coccydinia.

Also if you press around your tailbone from the tip you can feel which part is sensitive. That will tell you if it's tailbone or fissure. My tailbone pain increases with sitting an hours car journey has me close to tears.

Thanks for your reply!

Did yours just come on suddenly? I assume it's from the birth but it's 8 months later!

Yeah it's from sitting to standing and when I'm sitting that it hurts the most!

Would you advise seeing the GP and asking for a referral?

Mine came on gradually not related to child birth no trauma. First I thought it was internal piles. GP said the pain on standing is a key tell for coccydinia. Prescribed me anti inflammatory first made no difference. Ice helps temporarily but nothing touches the pain until you stop sitting. I went back till they referred me to a MSK practitioner who felt all around the coccyx to determine where the pain was from then referred me to pain management. I had X-rays yesterday as part of the process no obvious cause just one of those things. Treatment is limited to steroid injections they tend not to do surgery. You can get special cushions the one with the hole in but the last physio told me to get one of those foam nodule cushions that are used with wheelchairs.
Insist on a referral the pain is unbearable

ashleighr1988 · 15/02/2018 19:06

I will insist on a referral! Thanks!

I have this too. I am waiting to see a physiotherapist. I do have lower back issues having had surgery but the coccyx thing started out if nowhere and is quite miserable.

ashleighr1988 · 15/02/2018 22:53

I'm feeling really down about it to be honest! Not sure what to do! Will call GPs tomorrow, but I find sometimes it's hard to get them to help you 😂

My area let you self refer to physio. Maybe look on your doctors website in case that refers to yours.

GlitterBurps · 15/02/2018 23:17

I agree coccydynia. There are 2types- traumatic like after child birth or fall on bum or non traumatic which are more difficult to treat. I would ask for a referral to a spinal orthopaedic dr for targeted sacrococcygeal joint injections. These are usually done under light sedation as a day case procedure and includes a manipulation of the coccyx. Results obviously vary but can give a lot of relief. As PP mentioned surgery is avoided if possible (coccygectomy) as because of the area it has high infection risks and the wound tends to take a long time to heal.

ashleighr1988 · 16/02/2018 11:00

They seem to think it might be an Infection somehow because of my fissure!

I think it's more muscular!

But antibiotics for the minute

I've had tailbone pain before. I fell on it but I never went to see the doctor. Also injured my ribs the same day. I couldn't sit right for at least 2 years! I would go and see another GP. Even if they can't help you they may be able to refer you to someone who can. In retrospect this is what I should have done, it fucking killed. Good luck :)
