HELP - Baby suffering with Chicken pox - advice needed to help him

DS is 11 months and 1 week. The spots appeared Saturday evening. He started suffering really badly last night and basically spent the night awake crying. He's cried most of today and hasn't taken anything more than 2 20 minute sleeps. I've been giving him medised as this is allowed at his age and I know it has some kind of antihistamine in it which should help reduce the spots inflamation. I've also given him a bicarbonate of soda tepid bath as I've been told this also helps. As far as putting cream on him I seriously don't know where to start. Part of me feels like simply opening a bottle of calamine and pouring it over him. I've also put him into a summer weight sleeping bag as he has a high temp (despite the medised).

He's a serious thumb sucker and although I can't see any spots in his mouth (not that he will tolerate a fullscale examination) I'm wondering if that is also not helping.

Any other tips/advice.

Given that my 7year old is about 36 hours behind him and my 3 year old is just recovering I'm knackered, and tearful and would really love any other toughts that I could at least try and do.

Poor little mite.I used calamine lotion on the spots for both mine.Sounds like you have tried everything else possible!!.Poor you.I found the first couple of days after they got it stressful but then the temp/itchiness seemed to lessen for them.Hope you get some sleep tonight.

Strip him off as much as poss and just put a sheet over him. Plaster him in calamine.
Chicken pox is awful. Good luck with it all.

The frustrating bit is that at 1 year I can use piriton - like I'm using on my 7 year old, but I phoned the doctor and got a lecture which left me in no doubt that I wasn't to use it!

Oh,if he still has a temperature you could also use childrens ibuprofen to bring it down.

I know you can mix ibroprofen with calpol just wasn't sure about with medised. So you think that medised and ibruprofen is def ok?

not much help tonight but when my ds had it at the same age as yours I used calamine cream instead of lotion. It rubs in really easily and doesn't dry the skin.

just put this on another thread, but will repear here too.

you can tie up oats in a muslin and put under a running tap to soothe his skin in the bath.

boots do a calamine and glycerin cream that is much nicer than calamine lotion. it is thicker and easier to apply and the rubbing in soothes the itching a bit too

Am using the cream but hadn't heard of the oats. Will try that tomorrow or in the middle of the night if I get desperate!
