Those who were following last time when DS had oral herpes...

Woke him from his nap at lunchtime to find to sores on his mouth and one blister starting on his tongue.

I am hoping that where I knew to check in his mouth immediately this time that we will get the acyclovir earlier and not have the same issues as before. He is already starting to refuse fluids and I can't breastfeed this time... not the weather for dehydrating.

Off to docs in a min.

Am fuming!!!

So had, this a few months ago, started off with it being a coldsore (don't know how long for - just remember asking pharmacist if there was anything I could give him)... then he was miserable for a while, opened his mouth to give calpol and it was covered in sores. He was beign syringed teeny amounts of fluids for days as he couldn't bear anything in his mouth.

This time took him in at the first 2 on his mouth, and one on his tongue...

I just have to give him calpol and if he becomes distressed and refusing fluids (which he already is - I told them that but as he is eating it is ok ) then they will think about treating it

So, the plan is to leave a 14 month old to get a mouth so sore he cannot eat or drink (in the middle of heat), and then think about treating it?!!?

I have never seen him as ill as he was last time, and the thought that I have to leave him to get like it again is sooo distressing

Off to look at link

I'm a bit confused Flame - isn't a coldsore oral herpes? Is the problem that the doc won't treat it? Is Zovirax not suitable for a 14mo - that is what I use, I get coldsores regularly and this does seem to help. My sympathies to him, they do hurt. Will fgo and find a tube and see what the instructions are.

PandaG · 01/05/2007 17:43

Bugger, Zovirax is for 12 plus. sorry for being no help at all. I have been advised to up vit c intake too in the past. Not sure if this is to help cure or prevent, but maybe worth a shot?

Flamesparrow · 01/05/2007 17:43

The coldsore on the outside isn't the issue - it spreads for him (or did last time and appears to be this time) into his mouth - his tongue and inside his lips so that it is so painful he cannot eat or drink.

Zovirax isn't suitable for his age or inside his mouth Acyclovir liquid would fix it, but it is pricey so they don't want to give it.

I would be inclined to take him back tomorrow and tell them again that he is not drinking and needs treatment.

I remember how unwell he was last time and wouldn't want any of you to go through it again.

Frizbe · 01/05/2007 18:52

Oh Flame, sorry to hear the GP is being such a PITA, agree with Jelley, your going to have to trek there again tomorrow

Flamesparrow · 01/05/2007 18:54

My nice little guy is back tomorrow afternoon, so if I leave it til then things should be better.
