I think that you can as friend has had similar experience recently: asked a particular consultant she trusted what days he did ops so that she could be booked in with him, and he was really ace about it and so it was fixed.

Lazycow · 01/05/2007 13:00

I would certainly talk to the specialist and let them know you are not 100% happy with the outcome so would like them to do the operation personally. You may find he is willing to do it himself this time. On the other hand he may not be able to promise that - as it may depend on schedules etc.

If it was on the nhs you can 'demand' all you want but there is no guarantee he will actually do it on the day even if you want him to.

If you went to him privately then you certainly could insist he did it personally.

MrsBadger · 01/05/2007 13:00

not unless you are paying privately

NHS you get what you're given though you may be able to flatter him into it. May also help if you can be there at his convenience (my sis scheduled an ankle op specifically when the top man wasn't skiing and his juniors all were)

Porcupine · 01/05/2007 13:00

hmm this guyy is the main man
get hte teaching bit but now no time to piss about

From your Op I am assuming that you think the op needs to be redone. If it is just a follow-up operation that is planned or that could have happened even if the big man did it then you have less leverage.

If you are saying it wasn't done properly and needs to be redone again because it isn't right then he will probably do it himself as he will want to make sure it is right this time. You need to ask him and as has been said, flatter and be flexible - fit in with when he is operating etc.

Porcupine · 01/05/2007 13:06

oh yes
he is the expert
had an underling therew as a chnace it may have needed correcting thats fine
btu this time i want it done byt him as i dont want to subject ds3 to any mmore ops

I had the opposite problem after birth of ds by section. I needed an epidural patch - specialist chief of gynae man did it and did it in the wrong place. His underling did it 2nd term round and fixed it pronto.

bundle · 01/05/2007 13:20

how do you think the Main Man got to be so good at eye surgery?

Porcupine · 01/05/2007 13:20

oh i know i know

but its ds3 and he is such a poocher

piglit · 01/05/2007 13:23

But littlest-cod shouldn't be used for underlings to practise on.

I'd tell main man straight and ask him to do it. Grovel a bit. No harm in asking.

Porcupine · 01/05/2007 13:24

patic as secodn time
otherwise we will go private to enure we get hoim btu private hospitals resuss facilitesa re not good so want to stay nhs really

I had an operation on my hand when I was 12. It was done by an underling. Total hatchet job and complete mess and main man admitted after the event that underling should never have operated on a child. Wasn't properly fixed until I was 16.

Lazycow · 01/05/2007 14:03

Oh I would deffo try to get the specialist himself - as Cod says, particularly if this is the second op. Codlet 3 has already had one person practise on him and that is enough of a contibution to training.

Vev · 01/05/2007 14:45

Phone secretary and make a request that you want to see consultant rather than a junior doctor as consultants usually only see patients as a "new" patient and they're then followed up by junior doctors.

Also ask secretary (if ds3 needs another operation) to list him with the consultant surgeon for his operation and to let you know if for any reason he's not going to be operating and you'll reschedule. They are usually obliging.

Porcupine · 01/05/2007 14:46

ta V
cnat do owt til august ( scar tissue and al) hten we will go to the clinic to see main man

OP posts:
bundle · 01/05/2007 15:29

porc

waht I meant was you can't demand he does it, but you could talk to him about your anxieties re: further ops and that you would feel much more comfortable if he did the procedure himself. revisions eg on hernia ops are much better done by a very experienced surgeon, pref at a specialist centre, as they have a higher failure rate than first-time ops.

(fwiw, my consultant did a much better job when I had my 2nd caesarean, far less "pulling" of muscles/scar tissue)
