Hip pain - normal ageing or needs checking out?

My hips cease up when I’ve been sitting too long and can’t weight bear properly until I’ve got as far as the other side of the room. Really struggle to get out of a chair alone after more than say half an hour.

If I lie on my side in bed, I wake with the pain and can’t stand for a while, basically have to limp/crawl to the loo in the night.

I’m 38, generally healthy, could lose a stone or so but not particularly overweight, am moderately active. Is this just normal age and should I get on with it and stop moaning, or do I need to see a Dr or something?

See your gp and maybe have some physio. I had pain so bad I could hardly walk and my physio sorted it, it took about 6 weeks of exercises every day.

I'm having the same problem. I thought it may be our mattress but it happens when sitting as well. I'm 44 and could do with losing a bit of weight too. Dr Google suggests bursitis and I must admit the symptoms are very similar. Think we both better pop and see our GP!

Have it checked. Sitting was the worst for me it driving, then walking. Mine gradually got worse and xrays showed FAI. Google it. Basically bumps on the bone. Surgery to shave it off sorted both hips out. You shouldn’t put up with pain.

I’m glad there are real things it could be! I imagined my GP saying “you’re nearly 40, of course things are going to start aching.”

How long has it been like this, OP? Have you had a slip or a fall recently? I don't think this is a normal part of ageing if you are only 38, no. But I recently had something similar after I slipped and twisted awkwardly. It came on very suddenly and I felt quite disabled for a few days (also having to crawl to the loo etc). I found that hot water bottles, ibuprofen and keeping active (but not running) seemed to help and it gradually got better (although I still can't run).

I’m 39 and tore the ligaments in my left hip 5 years ago. It hurts all the time now 😕

welshmist · 06/02/2018 22:58

I go to the physio. he tells me when to go to the GP. You are far too young for aches and pains.

welshmist · 06/02/2018 22:59

Forgot to ask have you had a baby?

I have bursitis in my hips. It's agony when it flares up but if you are ok with anti inflammatories (I'm not) then I think it's reasonably simple to treat.

I just take prescribed painkillers and it makes it possible to move until it goes away.

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 06/02/2018 23:01

Oh, I'm 33. Diagnosed about 3-4yrs ago.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 06/02/2018 23:06

I also have pain in one hip; very similar in that when I get up from sitting I can’t it put weight on it as it feels like it will collapse. It gets much worse with driving in particular,; I think because I tense that leg and lift it at the hip.

I do exercises for my hip flexor and take ibuprofen. I think it is age related mostly - I’m 46

DC are 8&12, natural births. No falls or injuries. Has been like this since last summer.

Oh well in that case I would go to the doctor. I'm sure there's something that can be done. You are far too young to be achy all the time!

MakeTeaNotWar · 07/02/2018 07:49

I have had bursitis for 2 years. Have had 2 steroid injections which brought about 3 months of relief but it's flared up again and I'm in constant pain. I don't find physio helpful

springlike · 07/02/2018 08:00

Watching this post with interest. I have lower back disc problems and hip pain on the same side. Take Nortriptyline for the back but the hip can be so painful, especially at night if I lie on that side. I was told about 3 years ago it was likely to be bursitis, was injected 3 times which was excruciating and didn't give much relief. Eventually an ultrasound showed there was no bursitis! Honestly, some nights are so painful and I'm still no closer to knowing what's wrong, apart from, it's probably because of your back. Hope you get some answers - I'm 5 years in now and still none the wiser!

Amber0685 · 07/02/2018 08:05

You might have hip dysplasia, you can still have given birth naturally and have it. It is where the hip sockets are very shallow, and diagnosed by xray. Go to the gp.

bigbluebus · 07/02/2018 08:05

I've had similar problems for a while but I'm 53 and assumed it was the menopause. I'm fine once i get going but getting up out of a chair after long periods sitting or getting out of bed makes me feel 80! I go to the gym 3 times a week and it doesn't get any better or worse.

FancyNewBeesly · 07/02/2018 08:17

I’ve had this since I was about 30 - now 35 (have twins but only had them 18 months ago by emcs). GP isn’t interested - I was already diagnosed with ME so they’ve decided it’s fibromyalgia and that’s that. Some nights I get up and literally can’t walk to the bathroom without leaning on walls, bannisters etc. But my feet are also bad at night now too. Still no idea why really.
