Goitre/lump in throat but bloods ok

I went to the drs back in December as I had discovered a lump in my throat. It’s just below my ‘adams apple’ and moves when I swallow.

He didn’t say it was a goitre but sent me for blood tests which included a thyroid check. I don’t have the actual results but was told over the phone that they’re all in normal range.

I still have the lump and feel it’s becoming more pronounced as I can sometimes feel it when I swallow so I’m thinking I need to go back.

Has anyone else had this?

Might be worth putting an endoscope down. I had problems with my thyroid but tests were fine.

Ask for referral to ent clinic. They can do an ultrasound etc.

Ask your doctor for an ultrasound. You usually get the appt within three weeks.

I have a lump in my throat, all blood tests were normal but the ultrasound showed a lot of little cysts. I had a repeat scan 6 months later and there was no change in size of shape so I've decided not to have the cysts removed as it would mean removing part of my thyroid which I don't want to do.

Get a copy of your thyroid results. “Normal range” and actually normal are very different things sadly!

Ask for an ultrasound. I did and I have a multinodular goitre. All was fine but she said it was good to go and get a base line to measure them again when I need to be rescanned.

It's probably a cyst, although they should've sent you for scans to confirm? If it's getting bigger it's definitely better to go back for further investigation.

I’ve been tonight and she thinks it’s a cyst. She doesn’t think it’s on my thyroid though as it’s not deep enough. Been referred for an ultrasound.

Get your ultrasound, and if you still aren’t sure push for biopsy. Its undoubtedly nothing bad, but you should keep pushing until you are happy.

Just an update...

I’ve had my ultrasound scan today and I have one large and several small nodules on my thyroid. I need to make an appointment with my gp next week.

Has anyone had this? What’s likely to happen next?

I had this recently. Bloods ok as well. I think it is pretty standard to have a biopsy on these lumps. Apparently, thyroid cancer is very rare and a very high percentage of these lumps is benign but I think a biopsy is pretty standard if they cannot rule out cancer 100%.

Do they tend to leave them alone? I understand removing them means removing part of the thyroid which is to be avoided if possible.

They told me they don't remove them unless there are concerns about cancer or if they are getting too big and put pressure on the e.g. trachea. Sometimes these lumps produce thyroid hormones and also need removing because thyroid levels are out of range. But if biopsy and/or scan is ok and there is no other issue, they leave them. At least that's what they told me.

Thyroid it's a functioning organ producing hormons and if a lump comes out, they usually have to remove half the thyroid, which is something they try to avoid as it can mess with your thyroid hormones.
