Arthrotec query? Very worried

I had planned on having an IUD inserted today and was given two 75mg arthrotec tablets to insert into the vagina last night which I did. However I didn't go ahead with the procedure today as we discussed an alternative method of contraception. Now I am having cramps which they said were normal but I've been reading about it online and apparently it should be avoided in women of child bearing age. I am not pregnant and don't plan one however I am worried it will cause damage in the future or to my health in other ways now. Can any one share experiences or advice please?

It would only be a problem if you were pregnant so don't worry. It won't cause any problems for your future health.

Thanks Lisette. In your opinion is the reason it's not suitable for women of child bearing age Incase they are pregnant or become pregnant?

Yes, it softens the cervix which is not what you want if you are pregnant.

My mother used it for arthritic pain post menopause. Please don't worry. They prescribed it for you as a one off to aid IUD insertion.

I actually had it last month aswell for the same procedure but the coil expelled in the Mean time. Now I'm just worried that two insertions of the same drug within a month could have long last effects on fertility

I'm pretty sure it won't canderella. They'd have to warn if you if there was any risk.

You might find talking to a pharmacist reassuring.

Lisette40 · 03/02/2018 19:43

Really don't worry about it. I honestly don't think two rounds of those pessaries are going to cause future fertility problems or health problems for you.

Moviestar · 03/02/2018 19:47

Hi Canderella.I am in the medical field .Those arthrotec will be out of your system very quickly and will have absolutely no long term effects on your fertility. It would only cause a problem if you were actually pregnant when you took them, which is why there are warnings on them. No need for you to worry at all.

Thank you Lisette

@Moviestar one final question.. if I did become pregnant over the next few weeks then could it potentially have an effect on the potential foetus or is it just problematic if I am pregnant taking it?

The half life (time for half of the drug to be metabolized and disappear from the body) is only 30 mins so it disappears from the bofy

Moviestar · 04/02/2018 00:07

Sorry, posted prematurely.it disappears from the body very very quickly.
The general recommended safety information is to not become pregnant for 1 month or one menstrual cycle after taking the drug. It will have no long term effects.
