Am having op this week to correct rubbish stitch job following birth of dd 2 years ago. Have been putting it off as am terrified of general, but at the same time this does need sorting! I just wish I could believe I really will wake up...

pointless to say not to worry, because you are worried, but you will be monitored carefully throughout, and you will not be under for hours and hours, it will be fine and you will wake up x

Hi Alexw

I had this (or something similar I assume) done about a year ago, 4 years after the birth. It had taken me that long to pluck up the courage to go the GP. Anyway, was VERY scared pre-op so I really sympathise with how you are feeling. However, I was aneathetised by a lovely understanding lady, and woke up again 45 minutes later feeling a bit sore, a bit emotional but so incredibly relieved that it had finally been sorted & I didn't feel disfigured anymore. Felt a bit tender for 48 hours & had sex 6 days later!
You will be safe & you will feel great afterwards, I'm sure. Good luck, and keep smiling. XXX

alexw - please try not to worry, i was climbing the walls when i had my gall bladder removed too. Convinced i was going to snuff it under anaesthetic, and i should know better because my job as a veterinary nurse used to involve the monitoring of anaesthetics and really, you have nothing to worry about. Modern anaesthetics are brilliant, nothing like the old days. Even so, you will worry, cos i did but i was fine, no problem, i blubbed all the way to the hospital, blubbed all morning, having insisted i wasnt going in the night before to sit and blub all on my own as didnt want to leave dd as she was only 12 weeks old. I blubbed in the pre med room and was blubbing silently to myself when i went under, i just remember a really sexy aneathetist telling me to think of something nice! then i woke up telling them, give me morphine, now! Can't remember a thing other than that, it just felt as if i woke up as soon as i went under, didnt even feel like i had been asleep. YOU WILL BE FINE, YOU WILL WAKE UP AND ALTHOUGH YOU WILL BE SORE, YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID IT. Mind you, hospital food, still shit!
