For a few weeks now I've been waking up with a horrible sore throat, I've been taking painkillers and it sort of fades out during the day. However for the past few days painkillers don't help anymore and now I'm struggling to swallow as it's so painful. It's not tonsils as I don't have any.
I've never had a sore throat that's lasted this long before, what can I do to ease the pain? Sad

Humidification can help, when the heatings on a lot the airways can all dry out. We have those ceramic pots you hang over radiators with water in them, but even just putting a wet towel over radiators can add moisture to the air.
Drink lots of water to keep hydrated and take brufen when you go to bed. It's horrible though, sore throats can be miserable.
You need to see your gp though if swallowing problems continue.

Can you open the bedroom window a little bit? I find that "closed" air gives me a sore throat in the morning

pineapplesocks · 29/01/2018 06:20

In so much pain that morning I woke up at 5 after dreaming about the pain, have taken the strongest pain killers I have...nothing Sad I can't go on it's getting worse each morning to the point I don't want to go to sleep. I also have a red bump (small like a little circle bag type lump) on the side of my throat when my left tonsil would be, it's possible that is causing some of the pain when I was trying to poke it with a toothbrush at 5am in my sleep deprived state looking for some kind of release.
Sore throat so bad you can't swallow + heaving is never a good combination.
Going in to week 3 of this 😭

I get this sometimes. As some of the previous posters have said, increasing the humidity helps. (Once I fell asleep with the dehumidifier running and my throat was awful for a week).

The other thing that can really affect your throat is your nose. Are you congested at all, or having a post nasal drip? Either can irritate your throat, as well as making you snore and breathe through your mouth in your sleep. Mouth breathing makes everything worse, because you can lose moisture. A nasal spray may help with that. Most of my congestion is caused by allergies, so Beconase spray helps lots.

Have you tried gargling with salt water (i.e. tap water with table salt dissolved in it)?

NoStraightEdges · 29/01/2018 06:39

Go to the doctors, get checked.

I hope you feel better soonFlowers

No heating on upstairs, early nights, plenty of water all day, pain relief, vitamins and more rest. The rest is the hardest!

Ive had it for weeks, on Friday it decided to turn into full blown Pharyngitis, the last bout was October Hmm

It sounds like you may be brewing for something Flowers

Acid reflux? Gaviscon will help if so

loz12345 · 29/01/2018 08:14

I had this and went to gp and was advised it was silent reflux as I had no other reflux symptoms rather than take gaviscon he has prescribed a ppi at a low dose to take every morning and it has done the trick and it is a lot cheaper to get it like this than gaviscon cos they usually give you two or three months worth
