Dd (4.5) choking on all her food after bad tummy bug

My dd's had the worst tummy bug of her life last week, well really the only serious one.

She was complaining of a sore tummy and off her food last weekend then threw up suddenly and violently on Tuesday morning, seemed to pick up by the end of the day then threw up all Tuesday night, all day Wednesday and only managing to keep bits of water down, diarrhea too but only mildly. By Thursday she'd stopped being sick but every time she's tried to eat she seems to get the food caught in the back of her throat and gags and chokes and retches. She's got no appetite at all but is drinking ok. She has very very pale poo which smells truly foul.

I've had a mild version, very mild, haven't been sick but have felt it so I think it's been a bug rather than anything else.

Just wondered if anybody had experienced anything similar?

Hi SS! Sorry you've all had the lurgy too. Are you recovered?

I haven't taken her to the GP because they usually just send you away with tummy bugs don't they?

She's not hungry at all actually. And I have been giving her very soft things. Yesterday she choked so badly on some soft boiled pasta (plain) that she turned purple. Today it was a softly toasted crumpet that was the worst.

I was wondering if she's maybe nervous about swallowing?

Also does this seem a long time for it go on? In the past she's only ever been a bit ill with this kind of thing for 24-48 hours, this seems quite endless.

How long did yours last ss?

I think she doesn't know what's hit her. She's only previously thrown up through coughing with bronchitis etc.

How long, roughly, do you think before your lot were back on their food? Queasiness gone?

Did you have it ss, or did you escape?

She's been really poorly.

I wonder if I should keep her off school next week a bit too. She's been off all this last week.

That's interesting re. your ds. I was like that as a child.

I think she's definitely still feeling sick, she keeps saying she does, and she's not at all hungry. But the choking thing is definitely to do with her food getting stuck in her throat when she tries to swallow. She even said today that she'd forgotten how to swallow!?

I suspect my mum was a bit of an emetophobe. I have a horrible memory of waking in the night aged about 7 I think and knowing I was going to be sick and being too scared to tell anyone and too scared to get to the bathroom (big old dark house I grew up in) so I just leant over the bed and was sick on the carpet, over and over. Then I went back to sleep. my mum's face in the morning when she came in and found it and me has stayed in my mind forever. She ran from the scene in absolute abject horror and my dad had to deal with it. Then she went out for the day (it was a Saturday) and the next day and I didn't see her until after the weekend really at all.

Thanks for asking, ss.

We've been out all day today, at the zoo, where dd's been wanting to go for weeks and weeks. I kind of wanted to test out her energy levels too to see if she's up for school tomorrow. I'm not sure if she is to be honest. She's mostly just picked at bits and pieces of food - it's like she fancies a little something then has a bite and instantly feels sick so stops. But she's drinking tons.

All in all a bit better I think!

How are you guys? How long did you say the feeling queasy went on for?
