Severe back pain

Woke up this morning, twisted in bed, severe pain in my back (shoulder blade).

Have taken ibuprofen and paracetamol, they take the "edge" off but still sore. Struggled through work. Can't take too many ibuprofen as upsets my stomach.

Am currently nearly in tears from the pain. Can anyone recommend anything I could try? Dont think I could reach enough for pain relieving gel and have DD to look after (age 4) so don't want to take anything stronger which might make me feel sick or sleepy.

And when does back ache need medical attention? Will it just get better of its own accord?

You have my sympathy. Similar situation but mines lower back pain.Sudden and severe just from getting out of the bath this morning.Ironically having a soak to get my muscles warmed up as I have a pretty physical job.And for the last few days have had a sore shoulder. As it happens had previously arranged a physio appointment, and this part of my back has suddenly 'gone' before. Always as a result of a twisting motion.Currently I'm sat with a wheat bag .Do you have one ?that always helps alongside painkillers. Or try a warm bath,it may help you get some sleep and maybe it will ease off a bit more.Usually just Panadol, but today took co-codamol.I just go straight to a good physio now. Can't really afford it,but she always makes a big difference.

The pain may not be because of your back at all. Pain from a gallbladder attack often manifests exactly where you are hurting. If meds and heat therapy don't work it's time to see the doctor.
