How to give medicine to a baby - help!

My LO is 10m and needs some anti-biotics. Doc has given us fluxocillin in liquid form. However it tasts foul and DS is just spitting it out. I have tried mixing it in fruit puree and using a syringe - to no avail.

Surely there must be a nicer tasting antibiotic than this one!

in milk?
ice cream?

chilledmama · 28/04/2007 13:42

Try craddling LO with head back then using syringe...try to get it as far back in the mouth as possible. The further back you go, the less likely LO will be to spit it back out as the swallowing reflex will activate before your DS realises it tastes foul. Other than that...you could try mixin git into an ounce of milk???

my ds1 loves the taste of it, alway complains when he's finished the bottle!

maybe ask the doc if there is an alternative, quite often they have 2 flavours.

LynetteScavo · 28/04/2007 13:57

I got it in to my DS by mixing it with yogurt and sugar.

Try what chilledma suggests - that worked for me. Mine had to take daily medication for months. Put the syringe into the side of the mouth and squirt the liquid as far back as poss.

LadyPenelope · 28/04/2007 14:59

Try using the syringe, then hold him with head back and squirt to side of mouth (not straight back as that can make them cough and bring it straight up.). My nanny then holds my ds nose for a second and that makes him swallow. We've just been through this with ds - hated doing it, but had to be done so we put up with the awful screaming twice a day.

calvemjoe · 28/04/2007 15:02

Put it through a bottle teat, by the time they realise it's not milk it's gone.

olivo · 28/04/2007 17:31

let him play with a syringe for a bit, then let him play with the one with the medicine in, and very gently push the plunger a bit at a time. we spent ages battling to get gavicon down dd, and then she was prescribed antibiotics and we tried this, and no problems ever since - touch wood!

My baby has been on antibiotics since birth (4m old now) and I've got to say we've mastered the art of administering it quite nicely now. Then again I've got a horse so I'm used to syringing yucky worming medicine down his throat! I've used some of the techniques you would use with horses. As said in earlier posts position the syringe in a diaganol position towards the corner of the month as far back as you can witout bubs gagging. Then press the plunger slowly and alternate the sides of the mouth. Then we would quickly replace the syringe with a dummy or bottle (your preference) and give a HUGE cuddle! I think the cuddle is more for you than the baby so you don't feel as mean!! If you need any more help just let me know, and good luck!

Thanks for all suggestions but going back to docs for a change in anti-biotic. Surely there must be one that tastes OK????

I have tried everything to get LO to take it but even if I get any mouth it is spat out. There is no point in trying anymore so hope will get a new one.
