Is bleeding between periods ever not A Bad Thing?

Its never happened to me before. Halfway through cycle, 2 days of heavyish spotting but not enough for a tampon. Dark blood.
On the mini pill, smears always been fine - last was 18 months ago.

Possible things that have changed:
-used a mooncup for first time last cycle
-had sex twice over weekend after a long dry spell due to illness
-took long haul flights previous week so pill taking times might be off track. However I've missed pills before and never had issues.
-on TTC vitamins which online reviews claim to mess people's cycles around

I'm high risk for ovarian cancer so extra paranoid about this sort of thing, do I need to track it? Go to GP? (Conscience of how mad things are for NHS right now) GUM clinic?

Any ideas as doctor Google is terrifying!?

It's happened to me a few times and not been any cause for concern, but my periods have only started being regular since I got them back after pregnancy. They were always very irregular before that.

Given all the potential causes for yours, I would not be worried, but as your at high risk for cancer there is no harm in going to your gp about it. I think it's better for you to put your mind at rest at the very least.

Last year I started bleeding heavily mid cycle each month. I’d been on the same pill for 8 years with no problems. The doctor wasn’t even concerned and just changed my pill (even though I argued that i’d had no problems with it in the last 8 years, and really didn’t want to change it) ... but it worked, and I haven’t had any problems for about 6 months now!

I've had this before. Very darkish, and very 'dry' kind of looked like old blood or something, lasted about 2 days. It was break through bleeding it's called. Where there isn't quite enough of a 'dose' of hormone to complete the usual cycle. I had it a couple of times coming up to menopause I was 46 or so.
When I was on the mini-pill I was bleeding on and off all over the place. I figure that's what it is in your case. If you keep worrying then go to the GP is the only thing to stop you worrying.

Could be break through bleeding from the pill. Some women also get some ovulation bleeding.

But most likely cause is some kind of cervical erosion (weakening of the cells on the cervix, bit like a graze perhaps) they are quite common in people we have been on the pill a whole, (yes another side effect they don't routinely tell you about)

Having sex, or even a difficult bowel movement can cause the blood vessels in the erosion to bleed slightly. Mine was always worse about half way between periods.

You should definitely get it checked out but if it is a cervical erosion you can either live with it or get it cauterised. Fun either way

It's great being a woman isn't it Hmm

I have this periodically and it's never been anything to worry about. But I always get it checked, just in case. You should as well.

Elevated levels of hormones can cause it, I’m sure it works with all different types of hormones.... I’ve had it on and off for the past 10 years- drs have always said it’s because of PCOS

CandyMelts · 26/01/2018 06:35

Thanks all, few things to look into then but I will get it checked. As Pasta says, it is indeed great being female Grin

Quite relieved to find this thread - I'm having very similar issues! Been on the (combined) pill for years and suddenly getting breakthrough bleeding - 3 days of heavy spotting so far mid cycle.

Ive also had bad nausea and some tummy pain (off work for 2 days), colleagues have had similar so I assumed this was a tummy bug but could also be period related. Could it be that I do have a bug and that's affected my hormones?

I haven't taken any pills late so highly doubt I'm pregnant.

I'm also a bit paranoid because I lost my dad to cancer quite suddenly last year so cancer still weighs heavy on my mind. I think the chances of cancer are slim (I'm 28, generally very healthy, only had a smear last summer) but am generally a worrier!

I need to see my GP for follow up on something else in March so was going to mention it then, but then worried that was too far away, so I called the surgery today and asked if it was possible to have a short telephone appointment with my GP to just check if this is something I should be worried about or not. The receptionist sounded like she didn't feel I really needed to speak to the doctor but said she'd pass on a message to the doctor, but I never got a call back. I'm now feeling a bit embarrassed like I'm wasting NHS time.

So hard to know what to do when the NHS site says to see your doctor asap if you get unusual bleeding, but then it's so common you feel like you're just being silly.

Since having our first baby last year and going back on the mini pill (which I had been on for over ten years with no issues previously) I have had random bleeding. I don't get periods (never did when taking the pill) but now have a little bit of bleeding nearly every day.

Doctors told me to take two pills a day to see if that stopped it, it hasn't so I need to book and go back and I think they will change the pill I am on.

Apparently it is usually just the body not absorbing the right amount of medication which results in the bleeding
