Can porridge give you diarrhoea?

I've just noticed a connection after switching cereals and the effects are v dramatic, last about an hour but I know I am not ill.

I always thought they were gentle on the stomach. I am not gluten intolerant, either, so it's not that.

If it’s made with milk it can - hot milk can cause diarrhoea for quite a lot of people.

Caprinihahahaha · 22/01/2018 10:16

You can be intolerant to anything
Maybe try the gluten free version anyway and see if it makes a difference.

Are you preparing it with water or with milk - is it your usual milk?

Shockers · 22/01/2018 10:17

I soak my oats in cold water overnight, cook in the morning, then add the cream from the top of the milk just before I eat it. This works for me as hot, or frozen milk is a trigger for my ibs.

Tenroundswithmiketyson · 22/01/2018 10:18

Milk. I can take milk ordinarily. I had Weetabix with milk yesterday and was fine. Maybe it is the hot milk then? I hadn't thought of that.

I would go to the doctor. There seems to be something wrong with you. What about other pay products? Are you putting anything else in it like honey for example? Porridge has a lot of fibre. Do you normally eat a lot of fibre? How do you cope with it?

EggsonHeads · 22/01/2018 10:27

*oat products

MaitlandGirl · 22/01/2018 10:46

I’m fine with normal milk until I heat it up :( DD1 is exactly the same.

I drink Zymil lactofree milk if I want hot milk and don’t have any problems. It might be something as simple as that.

TooDamnSarky · 22/01/2018 13:42

It could be the high fibre content.
Low fibre diets are common for bowel disease for this reason.
Do lentils/beans affect you?

Tenroundswithmiketyson · 22/01/2018 14:15

No honey, no. I suppose I don't eat a lot of fibre and, yes, beans sometimes do it , too

Dairy is a massive trigger for my IBS. Especially warm milk, weetabix and shreddies/porridge etc are out. Strangely a small amount of natural yogurt in the morning if ok if it's mixed with granola.
I also don't eat ice cream any more Angry

TooDamnSarky · 22/01/2018 22:14

For years I suspected the dairy with cereal was causing me problems. But it was definitely the fibre.
I can't tolerate oats, lentils, bananas, peas or beans

beautifulpheasant · 22/01/2018 22:18

Yes I get it with porridge, just awful. I can't eat the stuff anymore. I am fine with other dairy and cooked oats(flapjacks etc) and granola - just porridge!

LoniceraJaponica · 22/01/2018 22:36

Porridge goes straight through me as well. I didn't know that hot milk was a trigger for people. I thought it was just me. I can't drink lattes but am ok with cappucino.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 23/01/2018 07:29

Me too, and I ame coeliac and have gf porridge made with water. My ds (not coeliac) would get it with weetabix.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 23/01/2018 07:31

Oats cause loose bowels (and evil smelling wind) in me and my mother. Oh, and bloating. Sorry, TMI. It's definitely not from milk as I make porridge with water.

I really don't think you need to see a doctor as a pp advised - I'm not sure what they could possibly say other than "don't eat porridge if it disagrees with you"...

Sgtmajormummy · 23/01/2018 07:52

If you've already got a high fibre diet, porridge might be the thing that tips you over from "easy and regular" to "uncontrollable and abundant" (sorry!) .
Personally I feel porridge gives a sort of soothing, lubricant effect with its gluey texture. And it stops me snacking until lunchtime. After 23 years I've even converted DH, but he has Quaker Oats with a teaspoon of Nutella (lightweight)...

Sturmundcalm · 23/01/2018 08:01

I'm intolerant to oats - fine with gluten generally, can eat wheat, etc. I did an exclusion diet years ago to deal with chronic fatigue so my reaction was to fall asleep but presumably the intolerance can show in different ways...

If you're normally ok with milk then I would assume it is the oats and switch off porridge!

Twoweekcruise · 23/01/2018 13:28

The same thing has been happening with me. I have IBS and have been trying to add in some ‘gentle’ fibre and believing that oats are supposed to be better on the digestion as they are a form of soluble fibre (can not tolerate insoluble at all!) I have been eating overnight oats and oat cakes during the day. Oh God, my guts have not been happy!! Am now trying a low fibre diet.
