Advice on breast referral

Needsomezzzz · 21/01/2018 21:52

Can anyone advise at to what happens at a referral appointment?
One of my breasts is suddenly larger and sagging more than the other.

GP also found I was tender near my arm pit so been given urgent referral for 2 weeks time.
I just wondered if anyone could give me an idea of what might happen. Been told to expect to be there about 2.5 hrs
Many thanks

I was referred for a lump last year. I had a mammogram, scan and biopsy at the appt. All was fine but the appt was much more involved than I expected. Hope all goes well for you

Thank you, I'm sure it's just precautionary, fingers crossed.
Glad all was okay for you x

Depends a bit on your age. Generally see breast surgeon for examination. I had needle biopsy at this point too. Then mammograms (younger women tend to have ultrasound but that’s about breast tissue density). I then had core biopsy’s under ultrasound guidance. They would only do core biopsy if there was a concerning lump on examination or mammograms. Core biopsy are a bit like ear piercing guns. The noise makes you jump but you have local anaesthetic beforehand. Then I went away for two hours (I went to Waitrose, I recall).Went back - I had already worked out the result - and was told provisional result and given a 10 day follow up to get firm results and discuss treatment plan. Some people went and saw the breast nurse as well if they were upset or wanted to ask more questions etc. I didn’t because I was quite well informed and needed to pick children up so they didn’t suspect anything.

I've got no lumps that can be felt, it's just the sudden growth and sagging so maybe no biopsy needed.
I'm late 30's no family history.
Thank you, always feel the more information better.
Hope all was okay for you x

They’ll probably just examine and ultrasound you. Hopefully all will be well or something easily treated. Mine was 2009, so a good while ago and a reasonably distant memory - the treatment was tedious but nowhere near as bad as one imagines.
Good luck.

Thank you.
Sounds like they can give you an outcome on the day then?

Have you let them know you'll take a cancellation if one comes up? Could cut down your waiting time.

AllButterShortbread · 22/01/2018 09:10

If you need a biopsy then you’ll have to wait a week or so for the results but the consultant will be able to give you a pretty good idea of what is causing your symptoms there and then. 9/10 leave the clinic with a benign diagnosis so focus on that in the meantime Flowers

I had a mammogram and they found lumps which you couldn't feel from the outside easily. So then I had an ultrasound and two or three biopsies under local anaesthetic. I got told results a few days later but I do know some places are a one stop shop so you wait for the result on the same day.
My advice!

  • Don't take kids! It is a long appointment. I had to take a 4 year old for some of it, and that went down really badly with the medical staff.
  • I was told not to wear deodorant for the mammogram. I found having my tits squashed in the machine uncomfortable and it made me feel faint. Eat properly before you go and remember to breathe as the machine is working! If you wobble they have to take it again.
  • the biopsy was ok, nothing to be scared of. I had bruising afterwards and best to take ibuprofen with you so you can take some as the anaesthetic wears off.
  • lots of waiting. Take crappy magazines for distraction, water, your favourite biscuits.
Hope it goes ok Smile

Do you know which clinic you’ll be seen at yet? You’ll be able to find out if it’s a one-stop-shop or if you’ll have to wait for results if you should need a biopsy if you Google.

Needsomezzzz · 22/01/2018 17:16

I've googled and it's a one stop covers everything, so roll on next weds
